I've done a Google search on the site to make sure I'm not rehashing an old thread...

Just watched Toy Story for the first time. Director's name: John Lassiter.

Coincidence that his name shows up as a famous laser pistol in Firefly?

Good catch. There might be something to this. For those who don't know, Joss Whedon was one of the (many) writers for Toy Story.

Lassiter was a character in Zane Grey's books.

I also think (but can't confirm) that a lassiter was a particular style of whip.

Either or both would be appropriate homages in a 'space western', LOL!

Joss was one of the writers of Toy story. Aparently steve Jobs (apple CEO and Pixar CEO) is a fan of joss's work.

There is a old gold miners myth about 'Lassiter's reef' the big gold deposit that just needs to be found. Given that the pistol was valuable it was some nice nomenclature.

Well, perhaps it IS just concidence...though I wonder how much of an impact in Joss's life the director had - perhaps quite a lot!

At any rate, I realized another connection to Toy Story - when Buzz Lightyear meets Woody for the first time, he says, "...local law enforcement," since Woody's a sheriff.

Actually, I realized that Toy Story is Joss's FIRST space western, in that sense - space ranger paired up with cowboy :)
