First off, finally someone pointed out that Joss's Alien: Resurrection script was so butchered that he even took a shot at it in season 2 of Angel.

Secondly, P T Anderson made Boogie Nights - Paul W S Anderson made Resident Evil which was rated R and it was even censored from it's original NC-17 version.

Thirdly, there will most likely be an R-rated director's cut of "Alien VS Predator" since Paul W S Anderson has already promised an NC-17 director's cut of "Resident Evil"

Resident Evil was a 15 over here, may even have been 12A.

I have to disagree with you about the gore. I don't think that a horror or fright flick needs to have a ton of gore to be exciting or frightening. I have not seen any of the Halloween films, but from what I hear, the first one was the best-- extremely chilling, but with minimal blood 'n' guts. Likewise with the first two Alien film-- not all that gory by today's standards, but on average, they're the ones that people (including myself) enjoyed the most.

Horror can go either way, in my opinion-- you can go for flat-out, stomach-churning blood and guts and everything you can throw at the screen, or you can go the more subtle route and suggest things. . . hint at the true horror that lurks in the night. Some of the best frightening stuff is pyschological-- the evil that lies in the human heart. After all, isn't it more frightening in "Bushwacked" that we don't see the survivor cut and pierce his own flesh? Isn't it more suspenseful because of the intercutting between the Alliance captain and Mal discussing the man, and then back to the survivor himself going insane and wreaking havoc?

I don't mind that AvP got a PG-13 rating-- I'll still be seeing it in the theatre. And yes, if I like it, I'll buy the inevitable Super Special Ultra Ultimate Limited R-Rated Edition on DVD, too.

I agree - Ringu is terrifying but not a moment of gore in it; but if you are doing a slasher flick or a zombie flick, certain rules must be obeyed - and whilst Alien may not be gory by today's standards, it was pretty damn gory - the dinner scene for example!
