Alien Vs. Predator Is Rated PG-13

Well, I had no plan to watch Paul "I'm A Hack" W.S. Anderson butcher two franchises with his paper-thin characterizations. Now comes the word (via me just seeing a TV spot on surprise! FOX) that it's going to be rated PG-13. Way to betray two film series's roots. While not the greatest movie in the world, New Line Cinema at least got Freddy Vs. Jason right, with a hard R rating and plenty of what genre fans want: gore. Another demerit in the long line of catering to the almighty dollar. I have connections that would allow me to see this "thing" for free at the theater but in all honesty, (especially now with the PG-13 rating), I can't find a compelling reason to waste my valuable time. Your thoughts?

WHAT PG-13. Those holes must be kidding. What can we see that's even remotely cool with a rating like that.

C'mon people, two badass aliens are going battle it out using snowballs? Give me a break. I was even looking forward for AVP, but now....

Well, for one thing I doubt that our good Serenity will be R-rated. Having an R rating does tend to cut down on the availible audience for a movie.

I don't really mind that AvP is going to be rated only a 'mere' PG-13. I've been looking forward to the film for a long time, now, and it looks very entertaining. And just to letyou know, RawDeal, there are a lot of great films that are rated 'only' PG or PG-13. Galaxy Quest, the Star Wars and Star Trek films, the two Spiderman films, and are all rated PG or PG-13.

Come to think of it, I think that the Alien films got worse in quality even as they got more violent. The first film, while it has its flaws, is the least violent of the bunch-- it relies on its characters and fear of the unknown to shock its viewers. The chest-buster sequence is violent, true, but it is shown--flashed, rather-- across the screen very quickly, and Ridley focuses more on the horrified crewmembers and then the monster rather than the blood and gore. Aliens relies on the frenzied cameras of the Marines to create a sense of disorientation for the audience.

The Alien movies don't really scare me-- I know that the aliens are make-believe.

They're more of an adventure/action fest, with the continuing tragic story of Ripley and her struggle against the Aliens and the Company. (One of the worst things about Alien:Resurrection was that it cut the Company storyline out completely. It was as bad as if the River/Blue Sun storyline was cut out of Serenity

)

That said, personally, I'm looking forward to AvP. But you knew that already.

obviously, it is entirely a profit move. even with the rating system in place, many people under 18 have seen the aliens movies and will want to see this one too.

'Course Joss wrote that one and, seems to me, developed some of the ideas that Firefly was based on. There's probably a whole thread on this somewhere in here but I just thought I'd mention it.

Figure I'll watch AVP too. At some point anyway.

Thats a pain, I've been watching the previews as they were getting released and was almost hopefull, but with that kinda rating I'll not be botherin'. Figures anyway stuff the fans make the money. Well, they won't be getting my money.

I liked some things about Alien:Resurrection (Cole, the mercs, General Perez, the funny dialogue), but what I disliked, I disliked with a passion (no Weyland-Yutani, Michael Wincott's character getting killed off in such a incredibly stupid manner, the ending of the starship crashing into Earth, which would have probably killed everyone on the planet).

Frankly, though, I don't see why everyone is so disappointed as to AvP's rating, and so quick to judge it as a namby-pamby film because of it. Like I said, a film doesn't have to have tons of gore and blood splashed about to be exciting and suspenseful. I'm not going to call it a cop-out or a bad film until I go see it in the theatres and say at the end, "Boy, that was a bad film, PG-13 OR R rating."

Paul W.S. Anderson wrote and directed it. Deep characters and well-written dialogue blended with suspense and action is not something this hack is known for. That is the *main* reason, coupled with the PG-13 rating, why I'm staying away.

Not sure if Joss' script got anywhere near the screen - at least in a form that he recognised.

This is off course the same P T Anderson that made Resident Evil PG-13. If you are making that movie - you need to do the gore. I'm not a huge horror fan, nor a huge Alien fan truth be told, but if you're going to do it, do it properly.

We must also remember that PG-13 and the rest of the ratings system is hardly worth a CRAP anymore.

TV and movies get away with putting almost ANYTHING on screen these days. I wouldn't expect a movie to be light on ANYTHING just because it's a PG-13 rating.
