I knew I'd seen the front of the ship before someplace ... memory finally kicked in about 3:45 am ...

That resembles the XB-70, Valkyrie.

I see the similarities (like the cockpit, "neck" and underbelly), though I'd probably chalk it all up to coincidence.

It's not surprising that they are similar. The ship pictured is called "The Interstellar Swan" and Serenity was also designed to be reminicent of a bird in many respects.
I have an old, old book of spaceship art that has 4 or 5 renditions of that design.
Traveller, if you go to Sparta, tell them you have seen us lying here as the Law commands.

The front and neck are similar, but missing is the side thrusters and , of course, the signature engine and Firefly tail section. It almost looks like like a concord at landing. But good to see that you've got Firefly on your mind.
