While that might seem confusing on the surface, it is not an uncommon attitude in the South.

Take me for example. I'm from West Virginia. I'm proud of the Constitution, proud of Virginians who fought bravely for what they believed in what was a losing cause, and proud of the West Virginians who rebelled against Richmond to form the great State of West Virginia.

I note for the record that many states have a history of rebellion. The original 13, Texas, West Virginia, Rhode Island, and all of New England (who had in mind their own Confederacy at one point).

I have also previously explained that the Constitution does provide for leaving the union...in which case most states would revert to territories, not independent countries. Only states with pre-existing sovereignty could claim true independence. Texas, the 13 originals, Hawaii...thats pretty much it.

Bush saying the Constitution was just a piece of paper isn't a "fable":

Yes, of course you will say it isn't true because of the source, and because the three people who told him what they'd heard didn't dare go on record in a White House famouse for retribution. So I'm not talking to you.

But for others who might contemplate whether or not he said it, consider that at the time the conservatives WERE trying to caution him, he HAD alienated many by his usurpation of Constitutional provisions, and:

It can't be proven unless someone steps forth after they quit the White House and admits it; maybe someday someone will, but given the potential repercussions from anyone else they'd want to work for, I doubt it.

So it's no "fable", it's an unverifiable report.
