Corporal Chaos, I'm calling you on your guilt argument and your false dilemma.
I am not retroactively responsible for the death of 3,000 people simply because I believe in civil liberties.
Also, you don't have to have draconian security measures to prevent another 9-11. You do have to have intelligence that 1) cares enough to prevent terrorism and 2) is not incompetent.
There's both such a thing as working smarter, not harder, and also such a thing as inappropriate response.

Well... the kind of security arrangements that work in Israel are generally the only ones that have been repeatedly proven to work against repeated suicide bombing attacks.
I would also note that it's impossible to prevent suicide bombings by intelligence alone because you get a massive amount of data from SIGINT alone and you have to determine what is valuable and what is noise, guess wrong and you're in deep trouble.
Also Milimetric scanners are not 'draconian', 'draconian' would be shooting everyone of middle eastern origin and/or muslim persuasion before they could get on a plane.
Also last time I checked, CIA and MI5/6 do want to prevent terrorism and the MI5 or MI6 are certainly competent, I cannot speak for the CIA

If security is overwhelmed by noise and data then I disagree that the solution to this problem is to introduce measures that INCREASE the amount of data to sort through, and therefore noise.

I have a logical argument against this assertion. CIA and MI5/6 get funding based on how much the population needs their protection. Fiscally they actually have little actual motive or incentive to do the job the public wants them to do. This might not translate over to emotional motives or incentives which (some?) might have, but it's a glaring systematic oversight IMO.
