To say the least. I keep trying to tell myself these things are "character builders", but, quite frankly, I'm not sure how much more character I need! LOL

Hang in there, you might write a hi-larious book about it someday & get rich!

If I could remember everything that happened...I probably could! Unfortunately, (or maybe it's fortunate?) my memory is terrible now and I don't remember things like I used to.

Verdict: You're screwed, that's one job that really does need not only specialized knowledge, but specialized tools - even a mad engineer like me is gonna have trouble with that one, and boy am I ever since the ex just informed me HER power windows just did the same thing (on a Dodge Dakota, the pickup version of the Durango, so if you know how, SPILL!) and imma wind up having to fix that, I know it, arrrrghh.
Problem up my way is four fer four, the last four places I have taken my car have either not fixed the problem, or made it worse, and each time I wound up TAKING the car back (once by threat of force!) and completing the repairs myself.
Oh, and I once spent a winter in baltimore with a park bench as my primary residence, and had to fight for it more than once, with a crumpled, bleeding, infected leg I couldn't walk on which eventually had to be sawed off - be thankful for a ROOF, meh.
I ain't all that fond of Olsmobile, and the Aleros laundry list of horrible defects, but the engine, transmission, and mechanically important stuff is as solid as the day she rolled off the line - everything else, however, is broke, including the trunk latch, my trunk is held down inside by a pair of pallet straps, actually.

We're debating whether or not to take my other half's pointA-B 1998? Mercury Sable to the junkyard now.
It has 367,000 miles!
If nothing major has gone wrong yet, keep it - it's not like anything's going to break tomorrow! Quote:
An antenna permanently bent backwards and tied to the rear-view from hitting 3 deer.
It's totally missing a couple running light covers.
Easy junkyard fixes.Quote:
A little gas panel damage from a small accident in Wally world's parking lot so I drilled a hole in the underpanel and bolted it togeter to keep it from flapping in the wind
Again, easy enough to fix.Quote:
A skylight that somebody rigged that hasn't worked since soon after we bought it in 2003. At least it's closed...
Not an easy fix; leave it alone.Quote:
The steering wheel is a tiny bit... bent. Don't ask how THAT happened. It also pops when you go around curves.
Probably one of the deer did the steering wheel.
The popping sound is the CV joints (the front drive axles). They're bad, and will break at some point. Replace both axles.Quote:
The driver's side window will only close if you push on it from the outside.
Hey, at least it works, right? :)Quote:
The A/C blew years ago...
Game over. When the A/C goes, the car goes.Quote:
The boots are really bad and the starter has a dead spot so you have to hit it with a prybar to get it to start.
The boots are why the CV joints have gone bad. They crack, dirt gets into the joint and starts grinding the joint down, acting like sandpaper or a sandblaster, just eating away at it, all while the grease is spinning out of the joint and leaving it unlubricated, and thus increasing the damage further.
The starter has a bad solenoid, and can be rebuilt for about $40, and will then last another 300,000 miles or so...Quote:
Still, it has a good stereo in it..So we're still debating...
Well, you can always keep the stereo. :)

LOL! Good one.
Actually, I wrote many emails about the trials and tribulations of living in that hell hole. I saved them, so I could probably piece things together. LOL

Shit, Frem - sorry to hear about the Dakota. She's screwed. I can't figure anything out on this damned Durango, and it's got VERY limited access into the inner workings of the door, even once you get the door panel itself worked loose. And as I said, on mine, once I did that, I just found a loose handful of broken plastic bits, all of which looked like they probably served some integral function in getting the windows up and down. I could easily slide the window up and down, but it wouldn't STAY up, and would slowly creep down, so I just glued that shit closed. I don't do drive-thru anymore. :)
The funny part is, the car is less than ten years old, and had exactly 17,000 miles when I got it. And it wasn't working then. The driver's-side rear window doesn't work at all, either. Passenger-side windows work, but ONLY from the panel on the driver's door. The A/C is fantastic, though, and will freeze you out in the Texas summer! That alone makes it worth the price (well, that and the fact that the price was FREE...).
Meanwhile, my trusty old daily-driver CRX sits alone and forlorn, desperately awaiting some attention, or my muse to return, or something. It was stolen a couple years ago, and recovered - trashed - a month later, after being severely joyridden and beaten to shit. She was my baby, my toy, and that just took it out of me. After that, the car was just never the same for me, and I just drove her after that, and never even bothered to wash her anymore. Getting run off the road last year (SUV driver on the phone, of course, who never noticed nor stopped; go figure) and smacking a curb hard enough to break both driver's-side wheels and blow the tires didn't do anything for the alignment, either. The car now feels AMAZINGLY unstable at freeway speeds - enough so that I won't take it on the highway for any length of time. It used to cruise effortlessly at 120mph, but now feels like it's desperate to swap ends at 60mph, exhibiting behavior I can only describe as simultaneous understeer AND oversteer. Downright creepy, it is. It tweaked the whole chassis, too; the front fender on that side no longer lines up with the door.
I really should either sell it off as a beater project car, or strip it for the good parts that are still there (especially the custom-geared transmission that I built by hand for her) and send the carcass to the crusher, but it's been too sad for me to think about. She rolled off the line in Suzuka on August 22, 1991 - and by mid-September they were selling the Del Sol, the CRX's "replacement", so she was one of the very last CRXs ever built, and I hate to see her go... Still, it's probably time.

Oh, lord.. It MUST be late, am laughing histerically at the thought of a deer with a sheepish grin waving a hoof at me from behind a crooked wheel...
Hooh! Ok, I'm allright...
Truth is, we were still kinda new ta being married when we got it and that wheel saw some really, REALLY good times and some not so good times. Never let a large man drive when he's angry.....
Listenin' to you all I suddenly feel pretty lucky, we lived in a shitty mobile home for the better part of our married lives without any a/c for two of 'em and down to our last freakin' dollar a couple times, but we always had a roof. Guess I'll go ta bed a little bit more thankful tonight.
Keep your chin up, people, we're all still flyin' anyhow....
