Bush should never have sent ground troops into Afghanistan. Instead of waiting 30 days he should have leveled Kabul the next day when the Taliban refused to hand over Bin Laden and Al Zawahiri, and then carpet-bombed en masse every escape route out of Afghanistan. Who the hell ever came up with nation-building with troops and civilian advisors for Afghanistan? That was a Viet Nam trap in the waiting, and nine years later we're still there.

I am confused about whether they actually did it or not. That is to say, I am undecided whether they are responsible for 9/11 and am open to alternative suspects and explanations..

It's like a murder mystery. The cops finger Suspect Bob and close the case. I look at the evidence and see a lot of holes in that story. I am not so sure it is Bob who done it. I don't know who did, but I have grave doubts that it is Bob. Doesn't mean I think Bob DIDN'T do it, but I do think it is somewhat improbable. Given the available evidence, I think if the case were argued in court, there is enough to establish reasonable doubt.

I actually liked your post better before you shortened it. I don't necessarily AGREE with all of it (I did agree with some of it, to be sure), but I thought you stated your beliefs pretty clearly.

Which seems to be the entire reason nobody ever even hints at bringing Osama to trial - they ONLY talk about bringing him "to justice" by killing him. It seems there is no interest at all in hearing his side of the story.

That doesn't prove anything, of course, but it certainly is a bit suspicious. If you have a murder suspect who you're SURE did it, and who you claim brags about doing it, it seems you'd want him on the stand to admit to it and explain why. So why DON'T we want that?

I'm with you, for the most part. I *think* Osama was probably behind it. I can't prove that. I *know* the government quite clearly used the incident to enact their agenda, and rushed extralegal measures through the legislature in the aftermath of 9/11.

I'm glad to see more voices I agree with who have thought about the situation in THIS thread.

And I agree with 99.9% of them; our government has taken precisely the bait the terrorists dangled in front of us; we are DOING exactly the things they wanted us to do; and we are destroying ourselves from within.

The idea of carpet-bombing Kabul and destroying Afghanistan worse than it was already destroyed before we went there leaves me speechless. Again with the "American might" crushing the opposition with over-the-top solutions which would leave millions of innocent people slaughtered in the name of rooting out a few rabid terrorists. I can't even argue it, it's so insane.

We're in two wars. Neither of them are with a "nation", they're with individuals and groups WITHIN those nations. So destroy the nations entirely? It's insane.

I, too, believe our own actions have brought our "Empire" down faster than anything from the outside. Bin Laden understood Westerners; he knew how to get to them, and he's done it perfectly. We let ourselves be distracted, in our own pain and fear, into rejecting everything that makes this country different, and in the past greater than, many other nations. We were manipulated into doing so to take our eyes off the things that were truly important to THIS country, and the greedy and power-hungry here made good use of the distraction they focused us upon to make excellent inroads on our liberty, civil rights, morality and the things by which we try to live.

It's valid: How much of the focus on terrorism allowed the Patriot Act, the Wall Street debacle, the increased gap between rich and poor, abandonment of habeas corpus, the disregarding of the morality of not torturing, detention of American CITIZENS and stripping of their rights, illegal wiretapping, and on and on? Cheney got what he wanted; and it's what the terrorists wanted, too. They both just wanted it for different reasons.

And we're still at it today...

The nut jobs didn't cause the demise of the American Empire to hasten; they just gave us the opportunity to do it to ourselves, I agree.
