I will very likely be buying another Subaru. That machine has served me very well for nearly six years, and I bought her used; she's more than ten years old. My mechanics have all said that she's likely to go twice the mileage she already has, so I call that a good investment.
I've also heard a lot about the Nissan Leaf, and from my research Nissan does make good cars, so I would consider that. But I really love my Subaru. If you like the small one-man fighter type, I'd look at the Impreza. That's one sexy little car.

True. The Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis/Lincoln Town Car are not made in the USA. There are built in St. Thomas Ontario, Canada.
And I do buy American. I follow the adage, "Out of work? Hungry? Eat your import car..."

As for buying a new vs. auction Crown, sure, you can pick a late model one up for about $10,000 but it will already have 100,000 hard miles on it. A new one , if taken care of will last for a very long time...
The only imports I would even consider are Volvo or Land Rover. Maybe Volkswagen. For a Japanese Import, Subaru only.
My current car is no gas guzzler. it's 19 years old, weighs 4,000 pounds and still gets 23 MPG. It has the digital instrument cluster and I get both instant and average MPG displayed on the dash. I've seen as high as 30 mpg in no wind, cruising at 70 MPH on a flat interstate.
If you pulled out in front of me with your smart car and I hit you... the Fire Department would get you out with a shop vac.
I was a firefighter and EMT for nearly 20 years combined. I've been to over 1,000 car accidents. Why do you think I drive a large full framed sedan? I was once in an accident where I was struck in the drivers door. I had a mid sized Chevy and was hit by a large Jeep. If I had been in anything smaller, I would have been killed. Instead I had just minor injuries (If you call 3 broken ribs and bruised kidney, Minor)

Most carmakers have plants all over the world now. Every Honda CRX ever made came out of their Suzuka plant in Japan. All Civics sold in North America come from their Canadian plant. All Accord wagons sold in the world came out of Marysville, Ohio, etc.
SOME Subarus come from Indiana, but some still come out of Japan.
"Buy American" doesn't have any meaning anymore. So much of the "American" stuff people think they're being patriotic in buying is made elsewhere, it's just idiotic to think you're supporting American jobs by buying things like Ford F150s and Chevy Camaros.
Wanna REALLY support American jobs and labor? Stop shopping at Wal-Mart.
