White House strikes back at 'Muslim' tag

The White House on Thursday responded to new polls which indicate Americans do not know what religion President Obama practices.
Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts (CNN) - The White House is responding to new polls Thursday that show an increasing number of Americans believe that President Obama is a Muslim.
"President Obama is a committed Christian, and his faith is an important part of his daily life," Deputy White House Communications Director Jen Psaki told CNN. "He prays every day, he seeks a small circle of Christian pastors to give him spiritual advice and counseling, he even receives a daily devotional that he uses each morning. The President's Christian faith is a part of who he is, but not a part of what the public or the media is focused on everyday."
Psaki added that "the President's strong Christian faith is what guides him through the challenges – a recovering economy, bringing troops home from Iraq, putting healthcare and financial reform implementation in place - but he doesn't wear it on his sleeve."
According to a poll conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life released Thursday, nearly one in five Americans believe Obama is a Muslim, up from around one in 10 Americans who said he was Muslim last year.
While most of those who think Obama is Muslim are Republicans, the number of independents who believe he is Muslim has expanded significantly, from 10 percent last year to 18 percent now.
The number of Americans who express uncertainly about the president's religion, meanwhile, is much larger and has also grown, including among Obama's political base. For instance, fewer than half of Democrats and African-Americans now say that Obama is Christian according to the Pew poll.

I saw this tidbit on the CNN political ticker just now. I'm not particularly surprised by this. Every other day I get an email spammed out from somewhere that says Obama is a Muslim, and is not a natural-born citizen of the U.S. Some of this material isn't just spammed from unknown sources, but passed on to me by friends and family members. I must get hundreds of these per year. That kind of unrelenting repetition has to have an impact.

I agree. What's most troubling is that its silly. It does not matter if the man is a muslem or a Christian or...as he seems...a fella that skips church every week.
Would I rather have a church-going Christian? Yes. Is it my business what he is? No. Man says he's a Christian, thats good enough for me. If he said he's a Muslem, thats ok too.
His faith, color, or birth status have nothing to do with his failed domestic policies, out of control spending, excessive taxation, indecisive leadership, or any of the hundreds of other professional reasons I do not support the President and if he was a bible-carrying church-going devout man of faith it would not change any of those things I do not like (unless his faith gave him the wisdom to avoid those problems in the first place).

So the American people are getting a crash course in tolerance and flunking out.
Or are we here getting a crash course in how intolerant the man in the street is of foreign cultures? Barack Obama says nice things about Islam--ipso facto he must be a Muslim. I say some nice things about gay culture or express a taste for rap music and I must be a black homosexual. This is the reasoning of grade school kids.
One thing that's bothering me a whole lot is how the recent polls seem to reflect a very, forgive my vernacular, redneckish view of the world and I know there are far too many "minority" folks in this country, along with commie pinkos to support such pervasive redneckery. Is it just that the foxnews crowd are the only people answering polls these days, just as they're the only ones watching network television anymore or getting calls from pollsters on their land lines? Seems to me polls can be gerrymandered a lot easier than congressional districts...

Hello,
Polls can get all kinds of interesting results depending on how they're worded. However, I don't think it should be overlooked that minorities are as capable of discrimination as any other group of people. Intolerance is rampant, and some politicians and religious leaders make the sale of that product their stock and trade. People are already inclined to dislike anything that is even a bit alien. A little push can go a long way.
Maybe the Computer RPG game 'Fallout' has it a bit wrong.
Its signature line is, "War... War never changes."
Maybe it ought to be "People... People never change."
The cynic in me believes it might be true. The optimist in me rails against it.

Bah, it's simple - anyone with any sense takes one look at that front loaded, highly biased "poll" and laughs it off, going somewhere less distasteful, while those desperately wishing to confirm their purile fantasies spam it and roll out alts by the handful to spam it some more.
The "Loud Little Handful" has never been more desperate, and despite all their best attempts to appeal to the baser nature of man, all over the media as of late 24-7-365, are swiftly sinking into irrelevance as anyone with half a brain turns away in disgust and tunes them out, leaving in the end nothing but a great big circle jerk of self-congratulation when they believe they have successfully silenced every voice but their own.
Of course, this doesn't make em all that less dangerous, cause when they DO figure out that they've been shut out and shunned, then they will do something... extreme.

It is worth noting that, according to Fox News, 1/3 of Americans believe in UFOs and ghosts. See generally http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,305277,00.html.
Hence, if less than 20% of Americans believe that Obama is a muslim, ghost or alien, then we are making progress.
