okay I'll give you that one. That's just come across so many times it seems rather old hat to me. And for the record, before someone more smartass-ish than myself comes by, yes they are real guns. So if the tea party does take up arms, I'll shoot'em myself.

I feel ya, man...
I can certainly see where one would get annoyed with em, thankfully I don't do such as a regular practice, but only occasionally to round out the Confederate body count for civ-war stuff, or as cavalry since I can actually ride a horse without falling the hell off and the beasties like me.
(this is rarely reciprocated, mind you)
Of course, they always wanna do it when it's so bloody hot outside, and them uniforms are murder in the heat, yuck!
At least I can get away with my syphillis shades(1), cause otherwise I'd be too damn blind to know which direction to go since I really AM light sensitive, but not for THAT reason, no.

Reenact, you have my sympathy. From what I read, that's just the sort of thing they were talking about.
I can only imagine what you have to go through. I hope it doesn't take much of your enjoyment in being involved in such things away.
The only thing I can come close with was when we had a booth at the local Renaissance Faire. Our booth sold embroidered shawls, Jane and I had both worked for a year to get enough of them together, they were really gorgeous. CONSISTENTLY people would come in, finger the shawls, then mutter (loud enough for us to hear) "Heck, I could do that!"
They couldn't, nor would they take the time (handwork isn't just an endangered art, it's extinct!), nor did they realize how much work was involved. We put prices up that reflected less than a buck an hour--we enjoyed having a booth, we were both embroidery fanatics, so it was worth it to us.
In the end, we hung a sign on every piece detailing the amount of time spent embroidering it. We didn't hear the muttering as much after that, but it's pretty disheartening when stupid people dim your pleasure in something by being stupid!
And I thank you for giving a perfect example of what I was trying to show by posting this. I have nothing against people "playing" along with you and dressing up, etc., tho' I'm sure you giggled and snorted as much as we did when you saw people's attempts to dress in period (!). But when people bring their politics to something which is supposed to be a re-enactment of a piece of history, I find it sad.
You go, kiddo, enjoy! I'd love to hear more detail about the stuff you've been involved with; out here in CA, we don't get stuff like that. Closest we come is SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) which gave birth to the Ren Faires; they have balls, meetings of Celts, sword fights, jousts, etc., but it's not the same as re-enacting OUR history, y'know?

Niki, luckily these people tend to be so mixed in with hundreds of other, interested, appreciative, or at the least less expressive, members of the public who come to see us.
I mostly do WWII, I've only stepped into the CW stuff once for a stint, but I usually get wind of what's going on at those by a few friends who do several eras (one does French & Indian, Napoleonic, WWI, WWII(Brit, Russian, US), and I think Boer War..).
One story in particular came from those who reenacted out at Gettysburg. As anyone who's been there knows, the battlefield has been preserved, but is scattered with memorials to different units. These range from good sized marble tablets to 4 story statues and obelisks. One woman asked a friend of mine "why didn't they just use all these memorials as cover...." lol
Doing WWII is a bit different than ren faire or even CW, the guys who tend to join with the US units are a larger percentage gun/military buffs than deep historians like some others. Ren Faire tends to attract those who are more theatrical, and civil war tends to attract a mix of theatrical, historian, military enthusiasts, and guys who like to do little more than wave a confedy flag and get wasted all weekend (thankfully not to many of them) As part of a British unit, we do a lot of 1st person portrayals which is uncommon in WWII reenacting because the military nuts usually prefer to be what I call "a teacher/curator in funny clothing" Which is fine, and by all remarks understandable as US culture in 1939-45 is not different enough that it's difficult to grasp (they still had refridgerators etc) where as in CW or before that, you have making your own clothes, very different use of language. But for us, the combination of being from '39 and from another culture, not to mention a different military tradition, gives us more license to actually reenact which we thoroughly enjoy.
Like I said though, I love the hobby and the occasional chucklehead which makes me facepalm when they leave will never ruin it for me.

Yes, I figured there was a difference, especially the firearms part. And definitely Ren Faires are more theater! Mostly, I'm tickled the idjits are more than made up for by the fun; that's half of what it's all about, right?
We had to make our clothes, too, and they had to be period appropriate (no zippers, etc.)...and our booths couldn't have nails or anything modern like that (we were even further back than YOU! 
). At least in the booths we didn't have to act the part unless we wanted to, 'cuz back then I was way too shy.
The first-person portrayals must be especially fun; I never had the guts or thought I would be good enough to join the "participants"...tho' the first two years, I was part of a folk dancing group, so we were part of the theater aspect, dancing in the middle of the "street". But actually participating; I didn't have what it took; hence the booth.
I wish I lived where I could see some of this stuff, it sounds really neat. History before your eyes as it were, which isn't most of what Ren Faires are about...money-making propositions they are, fer shore.
I do regret that all our early history is Back East and I've never been able to visit any of it, I think we Westerners miss out on a lot.

Gawd, I love the photo! Except that they look older than soldiers were then, it could be a shot right out of the war (for me, anyway!).
Do you have any shots of the CW stuff? I've seen scenes in movies of such reenactments, always thought it was a neat concept. Especially when done Down South itself, where some stuff I've seen was done in period-appropriate mansions, with people playing southern belles and servants and all. So kewl...
I'm getting downright envious...I wish we had stuff like that out here!
