Once upon a time, a couple of years ago, there was a firefly fit club where Browncoats from near and far came to support each other's efforts to get in shape.

Does anyone know if it still exists? And if it doesn't, is anyone interested in starting it back up again?

Long story short, I got pretty fit while living abroad and managed to shed most of my junk food & alcohol weight from college. I did a 1,300 mile bicycle ride for charity. Moved back to America about 5 months ago and BAM! 15 lbs up and loss of muscle definition.

I've decided that now is the time to get proactive about my fitness again and I'm interested in seeing if anyone wants to join me.

I've done 2 5K open water swims this summer. Might do another before the fall.

As for general fitness, I'm a fan of Dr Kenneth Cooper.

There are a million diets and plans out there, but it all comes down the most basic and simple rule.

Burn more calories than you take in , you'll lose weight. You don't have to do anything, but eat smart. No gyms, no meals in a box, no pills, no sleek looking home work out gimmicks... just pay attention to how many calories are in the stuff you're eating, and then choose.

You wanna stay fat and eat that cheeseburger and fries ? Or do you wanna fit into that suit or pair of pants you've been eying....

It's your choice.

Yeah... however you choose to do it, getting fit is a great idea.

This is one of those rare instances where Rap and I are in complete agreement.

I work a very physical job, constantly moving and lifting heavy cartons and cases, loading and unloading, picking and packing... So I had this idea that I was getting "exercise"; I wasn't. Not anywhere close.

Now I'm riding a bike again, and (cross fingers and knock wood) so far my back is holding up amazingly well. Did 6.5 miles this morning. Stretching that out to a 10-mile ride tomorrow morning. It's nothing yet, but it's a start. A month ago a 3-mile ride kicked my ass. This morning I did it twice, because I felt so good after the first lap I wanted to keep going.

So let's get this thing going! Let's get fit!

Stretch!
No crap phony fat or pig or cow in your diet!
Stretch!
Sweat when you run/bicycle/walk fast!
Stretch!
Do kung-fu or dance or yoga or climb trees or mountains!
Stretch!

LIVE in your body!

The Alliance wants to make you better.
I do not hold to that.
You can do so yourselves, without becoming Reavers!

Right on, Kwicko!! Biking is awesome. I especially love sweating my way up a mountain. Such a feeling accomplishment and it's one that I haven't found yet where I'm currently living.

Today I had a 4 mile walk and it was nice except for nearly getting hit by a car. Also skipped the gratuitous carbs, which is my biggest problem.

So, I guess I'm going to go ahead and establish my goals: I don't necessarily want to lose weight (I'm not overweight), but I do want to develop more lean muscle like I used to have. And I'm going to reduce the amount of processed food that I consume, even though that's going to suck and I'll actually have to learn to cook a bit.

Y'know, Sass, I've cut my processed foods down to nearly nil, and I find that I'm actually cooking LESS. How so? More fresh fruits and veggies! Instead of processed, packaged turkey, dressing, gravy and mashed potatoes, a baked lemon-pepper & garlic chicken breast cut into chunks and served over a garden salad, with fruit salad on the side. Instead of fried catfish with hush puppies, baked catfish on a bed of wild rice and sauteed peppers and onions. We really had to adjust our diet amazingly little to start turning it around. "Taco night" now involves a quarter pound of meat for two people, instead of a half pound, and there are leftovers now. It also involves lots of fresh garlic, jalapeño peppers, cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, a peach and a mango, and onions, as well as fresh salsa and pico de gallo... :)

As a bonus, our grocery bills have gone below $100 a week, about $40 of which is food for the dogs and cats, and $30 is for produce, most of which we're getting at the local farmer's markets. I *DO* splurge on stuff like bananas and fresh pineapple, though. :) And lately raspberries and blueberries, when I can find them at a decent price. I had my own blackberries in the spring, from a plant I sprouted out of my compost heap!

I haven't cut OUT anything, but I've cut DOWN on breads, sweets, and meats. I still love bacon, but I don't need four slices; one or two is fine.

And I'm on a mission by year's end to bike from my house to the Hill Country Galleria at Bee Cave (a convenient landmark to mark the distance, not for any particular shopping needs I have!) and back, a round trip of 36 miles.

If I lose weight along the journey to that ride, so much the better. And if I pull off that distance on my little hybrid bike, I get to step up to a nicer road bike. At which point, I'll have to up the distance!
