At what point does a fan of Joss Whedon feel funny about reading comic books ?
I mean, a 20 something yr old can get away with it... But at 30 ? 40 ? Please....

I think plenty of 30 to 40 year olds read comic books. Is it really that much different from reading the comics in the newspaper?

I'm 40 and have been collecting for 33 years. Although what I pick up has diminished greatly over the years (these days, it's mostly things with "created by Joss Whedon" or "created by George Lucas" on the cover), I don't know that I'll ever stop.
Demographically, comics have become an "old man's game," over the past few years... decades? Since the mid-1980s, themes for many comics have become increasingly mature, and storylines have become increasingly complex, intentionally targeting adults (and/or young adults) rather than children.
Starting in the early 1990s, with the introduction of superior inking techniques and the user of higher quality paper, the price of comics has risen dramatically, making it a hobby only for those with truly disposable income. Sure, some kids can afford in on their allowances, but many of them are probably saving up for a new XBox game or another month of WoW instead.
Hit the average comic store on a Saturday and you'll see kids shopping with their parents. But on Wednedsay afternoon/evening (Wednesday = New Comic Day), and you're going to find college students and guys in suits twice their age.
