It's hard to be nice to people who are EMPTY!...
BTW, I have a naturally bubble-y personality,(I'll admit to being a wee bit wacky) Thank YOU, they are the ones with zero emotional intelligence. Oddly enough, my daughter goes to school with the son of my fifth grade teacher, they are the only ones that have spoken back to me at any great length, but they don't go to PTO meetings because the people there are quote "frigid"...

Yeah we do have a lot of dangerous critters, but we have adopted a pretty blase attitude torwards them. You can swim at manned beaches pretty safely as long as you stay between the flags and within sight of lifeguards. we have pretty good shark patrols so beaches are closed when they are about though occasionally one is missed...we've only had 5 or so attacks this year and none were fatal that I know of. Most of us bring a little bottle of vinegar and some bandages just in case of blue bottles and jelly fish. I've been stung a couple a times and its bloody painful but only fatal if your allergic, or don't get attention right away. (again with the blase attitude).
Weird food: "Bush Tucker" is inspired by the indigenous folk and includes great tasting bush herbs spices and berries used as condiments (my fave is Lemon Myrtle). Witchetty grubs, a fat white wriggling insect larva cooked over coals, roasted reptiles (I won't eat red meat but I have eaten crocs. lizards and snakes...tasty if prepared right).other aussie food: Meat pies and sausage rolls (meat wrapped in pastry) are staples as well as revolting Vegemite, a vile black yeasty substance my fellow aussies like to spread on toast. We have yummy chocolate and coconut dipped sponge cake squares called lamingtons and another great dessert, called Pavlova made out of meringue, cream and fresh fruit. deep fried marsbars for the adventurous palates: mars bar dipped in thick batter, frozen solid, then deep fried...gooey and decadent.
I'm intrigued about teachers not talking to you...do they talk to the other parents? have you had run ins with them? I know i sometimes put teachers off back when I was running afterschool care because I looked stern (so one told me).Ironically they started talking to me more after I made the nasty school vice principal cry once when overheard her telling the parents of one of my charges that he was too stupid to do well at anything and that he would end up in prison (he was a very bright but bored 9 yr old, not stupid at all).

...and we are a reasonably friendly bunch too.
Not to mention modest! Every Aussie I've had the pleasure of meeting, in real life or virtually, has been among the nicest, friendliest people I've ever interacted with. It's the reason Australia's the one place I'd really like to live outside the U.S.

Oh so that scene from Quigly is actual? I thought that was more of a historical thing... Love Quigly!
I read an article a while back about Kraft mucking about with the Vegemite name, we're really good about pissing off other cultures...

I will have to find a recipe for Pavlova, I'm a fruit fanatic.
As for people not talking to me? It's complicated... I'm pretty tall, am new to an area that doesn't GET new people, am always using power tools that apparently the other mothers don't know exist and out of 140 kids I'm the only one who comes froma different religious background. Our classes look like a tiny Aryan Reich. There is NO diversity up here.
I DID NOT like my kid's kindergarten teacher. At the begining of school, my kid got stuck at the top of a slide, the other kids were rushing her and she had a meltdown. The teacher had the gall to say "We would appreciate if you would keep her off the slide" (like I'm there at recess!) and also my kid cried a lot the first few months (a little anxiety prob) so the teacher kept saying "You just need to give her more self confidence" like I can just wave a magic wand?... She was always saying snarky comments around the holidays, even though I did every thing I could to work with her. Mei-Mei's (yea, we have a Firefly style nickname for our kid!) first grade teacher was very nice though...

No diversity, thats gotta suck. My Mum had to set some of my teachers straight when I was at school. She pretty much gave them the rundown on what would freak me out, and how to handle my "qwirks" my first school was ok but my second school was run by hitler's sister the scary "good samaritan" nun from hell. She did not like me at all, but because i was so oblivious to those social cues (which everyone else gets without training) Her crap would just roll right past me. which would irritate the hell out of her so much she'd practically turn blue...for years I thought she had a jaw clenching problem till I worked out she just had a me problem.
Yeah Kraft did try to mess with Vegemite. It was a marketing ploy gone wrong. Do not mess with Aussie icons.

I always play that or ST:The Undiscovered Country(the part where they eat dinner with the Klingons is just...epic!) or Serenity or The 13th Warrior or Love Actually or The Three Musketeers or Last of the Dogmen or Under the Tuscan Sun or Down Periscope when I have a bad day... Wow, didn't realize my favorite movie list was getting so long...
TaH Pagh taHbe!, my dark Irish friend
