The Jerry Lee Warren rumor has got to be the most pervasive of all Firefly related rumors. It's almost attained Urban Legend status. Joss should somehow work a reference into the BDM

I watched the DVD with the captions on and you guys are right (of course) Mal does address Kaylee and not Wash. I'll take your advice for the future and not trust the scripts.

No, no. Just not the transcripts. There's a big, big difference between shooting scripts and transcripts. ('Course, the transcribed shooting scripts online might contain typos and such... but still, generally more reliable. I'd scan all mine to PDFs, but I'm far too lazy. Now I'm just kinda rambling. Probably contributing to the myth is Alan's joking reference to the way that the Wash character responds almost like Jerry Lewis during one of the flying segments (think Professor Frink in the Simpsons if you haven't seen the original Nutty Professor).

I can think of a couple situations where occasionally the actor thought that a character had a particular name but was later corrected. Apparently George Takei joked that Sulu's first name was Walter, which apparently grew out of a joke about Walter Koenig and he being confused. For a while, some people thought that it WAS actually Walter, then, somehow, it became Hikaru Walter Sulu in some references.

This often grows out of the fact that no one has actually officially given a character a first (or occasionally, last) name, and fan obsession being what it is, a misheard line leads to assumption, assumption leads to repetition, repetition (occasionally) leads to canonization.

Given the goofy sound of Jerry Lee Wash, I'm hoping that Hoban is correct.

If memory serves, in the commentary on "The Message," Alan Tudyk makes a reference to his flying style and calls it Jerry Lee Lewis flying Serenity. That probably added to the confusion.

A sort-of-similar thing occurs in the Sailor Moon canon:

In Japan's Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury's real name is Ami Mizuno. When the show was translated, she officially (in production notes) became Amy Anderson, but the Anderson surname was never invoked onscreen (the "Mizuno" name was from the original manga, IIRC, where all the senshi had full names).

In both shows, Ami/Amy is half-American (on her [absent] father's side). Thus, the fandom just decided that Anderson is dad's name, now hyphenated. Thus, some references to the original show now identify her retroactively as Ami Mizuno-Anderson.

Aaaand no-one cares. . .
