Could be any of those reasons, or a combination of them. It just irks me that there is likely a better version out there that may never see the light of day (especially with the rights having recently been auctioned off and all).

I see this as the most reasonable scenario.

I'll stick with this cheap used copy, thanks.

How much better, really?
10% better?
Not worth my attention. That's like, do I *need* extra butter on the last third of the popcorn in my bucket?
Nah.

Hard to say. But given the number of plot holes and contrivances, 30 minutes could make a huge difference. Plus, and improvement over crap is nice. I'd be happy with a plot that made some sense. And I think the original ending would work better, given that's what the rest of the movie was building towards, and would surely have been a ballsier story choice than they did with the existing patch-job ending.

But will the extra stuff ever surface?

Who knows. The rights changing hands puts it all in question. If whoever TPTB are decide to continue with this continuity, including Salvation, they might be inclined to issue a new version. If they do something else (new sequels that ignores TS in the way TSCC ignored T3) or just a flat re-boot/remake of the original (a strong possibility, especially if the property stays dormant for a few years), then they have less incentive to do so.

Hello,

So, what was the original ending/story supposed to be like?

Due to the use of Naomi 3.3.2 Beta web filtering, the following people may need to private-message me if they wish to contact me: Auraptor, Kaneman, Piratenews, Wulfenstar. I apologize for the inconvenience.

We had a jet-black ending. Connor dies, we're in a room with all the people we care about. You take Connor's likeness, you put it on the living machine of Marcus. He sits up, now looking like Christian Bale, takes a gun, kills Kate, kills Kyle, kills Star, kills everybody, eyes flare red, [snaps] the end.

*THE OTHER DARK ENDING*

the mechanical Marcus takes over as Connor and goes on to lead the resistance. It's essentially a secret to everybody, except the inner circle, that John Connor is now a robot, is now a Terminator. We're going for some irony there.

I'm just fine with them not going there.

I just saw Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series, and I have to say, for a series using a game platform to tell a story, it was pretty gorram good. Yeah, clunky graphics at times, but in many ways it was better than the live action movie it's a prequel to, mainly because of the solid writing.
It's the Blair Williams character background before she appears in the McG movie, and Moon Bloodgood provides the voice.
If you can deal with gaming graphics, it's well worth your time as a rental or an online play IMO.
