I didn't think it was terrible, but it sure wasn't very good. I guess I would have rather seen the story focus on the John Connor and the war instead of hybrid boy. I would like to see John outsmarting skynet in a giant chess match. However, at the same time there should be a constant sense of fear. There's is a wave of robot death out there and the resistance should never feel safe.

I fall into the slot of it's better than T3 but nowhere near as good as T1 or T2. It's not terrible but it's not good either and I wouldn't say it was lightyears ahead of T3.
My biggest problems were the fact that it featured a Transformers type robot that didn't seem to fit IMO. John Connor/Christian Bale was in it too much and I'd have preferred the original version where he was just a 'mythical' voice over the radio who only appeared at the end. And finally the whole hybrid cyborg who thinks he's human thing didn't sit right either. Reminded me too much of Alien Ressurection or AVP (2??) where they cross species.
Having said that it does have some good points. Linda Hamilton as the voice of Sarah was a brilliant touch. The same ghetto blaster with GNR playing was another. Even the CSM-101 appearance was alright. The Terminator bikes were pretty cool and fast.

Overall I am glad I saw it because otherwise I would always have been wondering but I can't say that I'll watch it again, although thinking about it it was the theatrical 'kiddies' cut I saw, not the unrated version.
Is it worth seeing the unrated version? Are there many differences aside from blood, swearing etc?

I've read a great deal about this, and it's just an F bomb or two, a bloodier stabbing & Moon Bloodgood's breasts for a brief moment. Nothing very significant. I'd buy it on DVD, but it's only on blu-ray, and I'm NOT going blue just for that.

It struck me as a movie version of a Firefly comic- not absolutely necessary, but a very entertaining little diversion.
As opposed to T3, which I found insulting.

The more I think about it, the first Terminator film should have been a standalone. Great characters like Reese, and Sarah with a worthwhile love story. Add in the element of paranoid fear, great action sequences(not overdone) and one of the last scenes with Reese going toe to toe with the Terminator...just awesome. Perfection.

I really don't understand why people love the original so much. The Terminator was a B movie. It seem to be unintentionally campy and ridiculous. I went to a show where they showed the movie with comedians cracking jokes a la MST3K. It was quite hilarious but it was like shooting fish in a barrel.

The second movie was actually good. Good plot. Good production value. Good action. That one I can rewatch all the time without rolling my eyes.

Hey, about that one, is it just me, or does the 5.1 seem REALLY inferiour to the original mono soundtrack on the DVD? I mean, they added some cool little audio touches, but it just seems bland in comparison to the sharper mono, IMHO.

No it's not just you. I was kinda disappointed when I heard the 5.1 audio. Felt a bit ripped off as I'm sure they could have done a really great job.
I just don't think it sounded right. It may have been the placement of the sounds but it's hard to say exactly why because I haven't heard it for a long while. I listen to the mono track every time now for T1. As you say it is much better.
Cracking film though, especially for a B movie.
