I'm not aure why people keep saying soccer isn't very popular. It's not popular with our media, sure. But how many sports have you played? How many people here have played soccer, how many have player other games.
Myself, in the last year I played soccer, football and basketball. The past I've played a fair amount like tennis and baseball. Ive never played hockey. Also golf and croquet. Oh, badminton, frisbee, and surfing and volleyball if they count. Is swimming a sport?
I used to play a lot of raquetball. I don't see it in the news much.
Ive never played lacrosse or hockey.
But in my experience if you get a random group of people together, the thing your most likely to have is a soccer game, though sometimes it's tennis or basketball. Unless the summer games count, and then maybe volleyball. Or swimming if it counts.
Point being, it's a reasonably american pastime, it's not like we strap on 40 pounds of armor to play rugby on weekends. If you really want soccer to take of in the US as a professional sport, just start calling it football. Which it is. Rugby is not football. The foot seldom connects to the pigskin, which is not a ball. It should be called hand-pig.

I played soccer when I was young, football in HS (quarterback), tennis, and baseball.
I liked soccer, football best tho.
