I'm sure not that much has been put into soccer (yet), but it's a fact. The payoff is pretty damned good, and worth it.

Soccer in this country is like the 10th most popular sport, right behind bowling and lawn darts, so not much goes into it. The soccer tv shows here are like public access cable shows, so bad they're good. Europeans put soccer next to God and family and those may finish 2nd and third. One of those wussies in shorts playing in the Euro big leagues makes many millions just like our top athletes (basketball, football, baseball). So if anyone is going to put money into it it's going to be them, not us.
I can't figure the sport out really, but trying to has been great fun and a great education. I think I have figured out one thing though - that a lot of it's magic, the ability to make grown men weep, is one of the main things that US sports fans hate: not a lot of scoring. But when something is limited to such a degree it raises it's value. And if you wait 91 minutes for it BANG! WHAA! That's pretty special.

I said in both posts that I was happy. And there's no politics involved, it's just that it's that way.

Byte explained it perfectly. But Pizmo's probably right, given soccer isn't the thing here it is in Europe. The fact remains that America can afford the best, can afford to provide the best training, etc. It does make a difference.

Let's just forget that part, it was just my usual effort to put things in perspective. The WIN is what's important, and I'm happy for all involved. Let it go at that.

What they aren't telling you is that Americans are taught to play soccer from the time we're six, and we play american football for like a year in high school. Every one of these people plays soccer, or has, but probably does, and we all know that Man United traded David Beckham to Real Madrid.

All of this is a ruse.

I can see why the rest of the world doesn't want the U.S. to win.

If this country got just 1/4 as soccer crazed as other countries, it'd quickly become a world power in the sport as well.

With all the $$ and passion this country has to offer.... a nation of 300 million strong ( with a fast growing Latin population ), it would rival any other for the cup in no time.

Russia? China ? Hell, those " super powers " didn't even make it to S. Africa.

But I suspect this is the apex of footie in the near future. Ghana will likely show us how it's played, and we'll be proud of making it to the 2nd round.

Which is nice, I suppose.

DT, curses and drats. My rotten hippy parents tried to make me play soccer when I was little. I resisted, with tantrums and tears, and I'm a better man for it. Should I ever have the misfortune of reproducing, my progeny will not play soccer. Rugby is acceptable.

Oh wow, England is going to need to step it up with those competitors. They surprised me in the group phase -- I thought they were going to do better.

As far as the US goes, it is exciting, but we certainly didn't look as dominating as I'd like... (2 ties, one of which should have been a win and then a last second win) (In my head, I'm hearing Sean Connery's, "I'm waiting to be impressed" line from one of his movies -- um, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or maybe the one with Katherine Zeta Jones). Anyways, here's hoping!
