I have to say that series 3's episode Blink was one of the most clever singular TV episodes I've ever seen.
Don't think you'll get much argument there: its definitely on the Best. Episode. Ever. shortlist (and I don't think its been equalled). "The Girl in the Fireplace" from the previous season comes close, I think (the story feels as if Douglas Adamas has returned).
Both "Blink" and "Girl in the Fireplace" were written by Steven Moffat, the current show-runner. Along with others he wrote ("The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" from Series One and "Silence of the Library/Forest of the Dead" from Series Four) they are some of my favorites. Odd that with just a few exceptions I have been very underwhelmed by Series Five so far.

not really, cuz it's just as you said, all those REALLY GOOD episodes were WRITTEN by Stephen Moffat, now he is the show runner, and he's just written the BIG stuff. left the "filler" to others.
these are the stories he's written this year, and i'd be willing to bet they are the ones you weren't underwhelmed by, save one.
Episode 1) The Eleventh Hour
Episode 2) The Beast Below ( didn't do much for me, except for the creepy sideshow fortune teller judge things, seemed very Moffat)
Episode 4) The Time of Angels
Episode 5) Flesh and Stone
and the upcoming finale
Episode 12)The Pandorica Opens
Episode 13)The Big Bang

I'll reserve judgment on the series until the two-part finale, but none of those other Moffat penned tales impressed me the way his earlier ones did.

Thanks all for the very helpful responses!
I just got the first disc of series 4 in the mail from netflix. Haven't been able to watch it, however, as my power was out since Friday night.
I went back and watched the end of the last episode of Season 1 of Torchwood. That was great now that I knew what I was listening for.

Thanks for this thread, I also am in the middle of sorting out the Doctor Who/Torchwood mess. I had to rewatch Season 4 so I could link them as they should be, I do not seem to like Torchwood much, can't figure it out.
I 'love' David Tennant, not sure about Matt thought,...okay so far. He may grow on me....

Well, just finished Series 4 tonight. What a great finish! I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of Tennant's tenure.
Probably have to wait awhile before Series 5 is available, however.

So I take it you still have the specials to watch?
Season 5 is great. Matt Smith does a great job. Different but the same, Karen Gillan is just perfect as Amy and the writing is brilliant for the most part but you do have to watch closely. There are comments and scenes that play a big part later. More so than the Bad Wolf, Torchwood and Saxon references in earlier seasons.

Yes. We'll probably watch "The Next Doctor" tomorrow night. We just finished off the last DVD of season one of Warehouse 13. So, now, it's back to the Dr.
We've seen all of them through Netflix as we don't have access to BBC America. So, I guess I'll have a wait for Series 5.
