Yeah, but from a dramatic storytelling standpoint it was BRILLIANT!!! Leaves season 3 wide open.

I really think it was all a front. He's not really getting back with his ex.
Since he had no idea she'd just broken up with Demming, he could have been using the ex to shake her up.
Remember, he did tell Alexis earlier in the show that he was expecting Beckett to change her mind about going to the Hamptons, even though he didn't come out and say Beckett's name.

Season 3 plot choices by Tim Minear:
1. Beckett hires hitman to kill Castle's wife.
2. Beckett kills Castle's wife with a firearm.
3. Beckett kills Castle's wife with a candlestick.
3. Castle kills his wife and frames Beckett.
Hilarity ensues.

It's Moonlighting all over again. Though Castle and Beckett aren't nearly as toxic as Hayes and Addison. As soon as Castle said she would change her mind I knew he wasn't talking about Beckett, and the ex showed up right on cue.

Shades of Mal/Inara all over again. Without the nudity.
Moonlighting was excellent at first, until Willis got all alcoholic. Now he's got the 'dry drunk' thing going for him. BW was a PI in Real Life BTW.

I want them to be fiscally responsible and I want these goddamn lobbyists out of Washington. Do that and I'll say I'm a Republican... I hate the government, OK? I'm apolitical. Write that down. I'm not a Republican."

That's exactly what I thought! In fact, I posted the same thing on Hulu boards.
They never showed that heart wrenching part, where Castle's feelings actually flip 180! This is why I think it was all show! Castle is playing both, Gina (to clam her down about overdue script), and Beckett (to make her realize).
Oh Rick Castle, you're smart!!

I think Castle was talking about Gina when he said she said No. Gina and Castle had that hours long conversation and Alexis pointed out that Castle hadn't ever been alone that long.
Gina wants him to get the book done. Gina, like Castle's book agent, knows that "Heat Wave" was a love letter to Beckett. Castle would have mentioned to her that Alexis and his Mom are not going to be around...so Castle asks Gina to go. She automatically says no. Changes her mind later...cause she wants him to get the book done and she will have Castle all to herself in the Hamptons. No fans coming by to get him to sign their chests.

Then, while sittin' on the patio of beach house, Castle will realize that he really misses Beckett..and she too will feel the same way.. their summer is going to suck but "Absence makes hearts grow fonder!"
Looking forward to season-3!
