Anything other than "I'm looking for the boy with the shimmer wine". She might as well have said, "I am at a ball".
But "I'm looking for the boy with the shimmerwine" is also an intentionally overtly obvious explanation for why she is turning away from Ath at that moment.
He says an offensive thing, she turns away. Just turning away could be deemed childish - and anyway, she IS being paid to keep him company - so she tempers it/scolds him with that elaboration for why she suddenly turned away from him, which really only emphasizes that she could care less about the shimmerwine boyand Ath said something stupid.

Grrr I was really hoping this was a specific saying. Instead it will just always grate on me like the use of "Capitol City". Every other city or place name was cool except that one.
But what's wrong with "Capital City"? *G*

I had thought for a while that she said I am looking for the boy with the shimmer wand. But anyway yes I agree with the line being a polite subject change, explaination as to why she is turning away and all that. I wonder what shimmerwine tastes like. Maybe we should add it to the welcome buffet for the new Browncoats and see how they like it. You know on the table next to the strawberries and Mudder's Milk and Wife Soup.

Excellent thought, lady!
Please bring it along whenever a new 'coat shows up.
I'm trying to keep up a list, but having it all there and correct would be out of character.

Ah yes, shimmerwine. That line totally bothered me from the moment I first saw Shindig. I agree with the subject-change, politely putting Ath in his place explanation but still... I hate to say it,
but I think part of the problem might be on the delivery of the line. When Inara said the line it just had this unsure, questioning quality to it. Just weird. Don't get me wrong, LOVE Morena. LOVE, and what she brings to Inara is wonderful. But I think it was a combination of a not so stellar piece of dialog and a weird delivery of said dialog. Once again though, Love Morena, she makes me weep with her in HoG, no complaints, she's great, merely an observation, (after all how does one say a line like that!). That being said, try not to let it bother you too much Zeek. My sister and I have sort of turned it into a running joke now. Whenever things get heated or we just really need a subject change we'll say "I'm looking for the boy with the shimmerwine". Also works well to simply inject some total randomness into any conversation..."Did you hear about the rash of car thefts on the news today?" "I'm looking for the boy with the shimmerwine." I could go on, although I'm sure you get the idea, it's quite amusing when we do it in front of the unenlightened public. And glitter + champagne I am so there.

according to the subtitles on my dvd of the series she says " i'm looking for the boy with the shimmer one" which to me is actrually more what it sounds like. however shimmer wine seems to make more sense :/ the audio commentary makes no mention of the line :/

I think we used to maintain a shimmerwine fountain at one end of the buffet when we sent newcomers up to the galley after we gave them strawberries and their first mugs of Mudder's down by the airlock.
I've always thought of it in terms of those gold-flecked liqueurs one can get here on ETW, only winier, of course.
Not gonna drink glitter, no way no how.

Ahhhh, me too.
I had a combo of hospital time (I'm okay now) and a hard-drive crash which caused a whole lotta interruptions and broken threads.
I'm seeing numbers double where we used to be.
Amazing it still has the drawing power.
The virtual browncoat closet must be stuffed to bursting.
Castle is gotta-watch TV but I miss our Mal, and can't eat a strawberry without thinking of Serenity and good times around the table -- just before something would go wrong.

OMG, MsA.
I mean! Thanks for the link, but...
Surely nothing so pedestrian would be served at an elegant shindig. Or in our sparkling buffet fountain aboard ship.
