Good thread as I love movies; here are some of my favs since 2000:
Memento - it totally and thoroughly confused and baffled me, Iloved it.
Pan's Labyrinth - story, story, story. Brilliant imagery, well written and acted.
The Dark Knight - Extremely well written and brilliantly acted, I rate this above Batman Begins.
The Departed - All those iconic actors in one movie, I was in heaven.
Amelie - Loved the inventiveness of the storytelling, simply brilliant and uplifting without being syrupy or corny.
LOTR: Return of the King; my fav in the trilogy.
Wall-E - made me care for an animated character; that's good storytelling.
Avatar - despite Cameron's political underpinnings in this story, it still manages to awe it's audience.
V for Vendetta - Hugo Weaving breathes life into V and gives the film its most human character
Watchmen - Like V for Vendetta, I was surprised by who I most liked in this film, Rorschach.
No Country for Old Men - Inspired script, solid perfs and one of the best villians ever (Joker being another).
Gladiator - Classic story, excellent script, solid acting, perfect ending. Brought back sandal epics (Troy, 300).
Million Dollar Baby - Clint Eastwood doing his thing, really good story, that peeled like an onion.
Secretary - an underrated indy, acquired taste. A quirky love story that is one of my underdog favs.
Monster - Inspired perfs by Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci. Theron was so good it was scary, it was too bad that she didn't acknowledge the perf by Ricci in her Oscar acceptance speech. Ricci gave her something tangible to play off of.
Moulin Rouge - sheer magic in the grand hollywood sense, but without being Hollywood. A great story with classic music.
The Wrestler - second underdog indy movie; story again and inspired acting by Mickey Rouke (best since his stint in Sin City).
Kill Bill 1 & 2 - I didn't think Part 2 would live up to the slapsticky type of humor Part 1 had; then I discovered it was better.
Inglorious Basterds - it was dark and funny, suspenseful and ironic and all Tarantino at his best.
Kick-Ass - It's not perfect, but the overall story and script has flashes of brilliance. Nick Cage and Chloe Moretz, go see for yourself.

I'm not leaving Serenity out so much as I am reserving a special place upon the mantle all by itself. It's what got us here, it's a given that it is number one.
