Well, it's very much true that the 'verse is deep and characterful; that's one of the things I love about Firefly. But spinoffs are a tricky thing. One story with a deep 'verse is excellent, but one 'verse with several stories becomes thin and stretched. The possibilities waiting on the horizons get explored, and then there's just nowhere else to go. That's why Buffy couldn't have gone for another season, for example; there wasn't too much the writers could do that was new and exciting.

I vote for no spinoffs for Firefly. Leave that 'verse unexplored. Give us our Big Damn Movie(s), with all the characters that we love. That'll do me.

yeah joss should pitch a "similar" show with the name "serenity" to another channel and have a totally different cast but the show is set in the firefly universe and then in one episode kill off the entire cast and bring in the old firefly cast.

yeah i know that couldnt happen but i laugh thinking about it.

i agree with the reasons against a firefly spinoff. i want our bdh's to tell the story so i'll wait for the movies.
but something/anything new from joss and company on tv would be a nice. really missing the new.
i'm working my way through buffy season six now. after that, i think i'll start with angel season 1. i just caught a repeat and it got me all wanting to see it again. i said 'wow i don't remember that' a couple of times.

I would like to see a return of the series to TV, but the hope is looking pretty dim to be honest. With the time restriction in the contract w/ Fox, and from what Nathan & Jewel said about it being years before a tv series could be done, I think we will never see Serenity on the small screen again. Unless Universal thinks the show will bring in the ratings and put it on Sci Fi channel, I think we will have to be content w/ the movies.

Now as far as a spin off goes, I would not mind it one bit. Firefly, even if it is w/ a different ship & crew, is still Firefly. I would watch it, and try to get everyone I can think of to watch as well.

I think you may be on to something, if Fox still have the TV rights.
A reality show of At Home with the Cobbs may be the only thing they'll pick up

as much as it hurts(cause i would rather have 3 full seasons of firefly than 3 movies BY FAR) i dont think we will get a tv series anymore. 10 years is too long and i feel that the joss teh cast and crew knew that going into making the serenity movies. like this would be their last hurrah before its too late. i get the feeling that this is their curtain call.

but -IF- the movies do very well and negotiations can be made i could see a tv series happen. but i wouldnt bet on it.

god i hope im wrong.

Fox may have the rights for ten years, but that doesn't mean that they won't either decide to make some use of them and ask JW to continue with the original series, or failing that sell them off to a network that is interested in doing so.

(I don't quite get why people seem to assume that Fox is holding those rights for the sheer purpose of pissing off Firefly fans)

Well you know.. the whole Spinoff idea gets me all happy and mournful at the same time. I myself dont like spinoff's much. I prefer the Series of episodes telling a story, with single episodes that completley break from the cast of the story and tell a day in the life of a person that has (usualy unwittingly) been influenced by the actions of the cast. Take for example the "Janitor/Maintenance Men" episode of B5. if any of you know what im talking about, then you get the idea. The stories of completley unconnected people just popping up from time to time to give us a break from the overall story.

Of course with the bleakness of Firefly/Serenity's return it doesnt look like thats even an option. But who knows. Joss has changed his mind on a whim before. Of course it realy all lays in the Hands of Universal now.

In my own opinion, Firefly should never have been on Fox in the First Place. it should have had its debut on Sc-Fi. They need some new stuff taht just simply Kicks Ass!

Well maybe not purposefuly pissing off Firefly fans.. but it is possible they have a "Stupid Bug" up there backside that keeps them from making good judgement calls.

Look at thier track record of shows. if it's not a huge hit in the first 6 episodes the yank it. Unless someones brother or cousin is in it or some such thing. then you have shows like Firefly and John Doe that get killed because af lame excuses for shows like Fastlane.. what the hell is that?

It's only by appealing to the lowest common denominator that they have stayed on the air this long.

I don't see how Fox could possibly have the rights to a series that doesn't even exist and doesn't use any of the material from the Firefly series.

Come on, a Firefly spinoff *HAS* to be better than another season of mind-numbingly degenerate reality shows and vapid soft porn shows (without the nudity!) that Fall 2004 TV season is promising.

Case in point:
http://fox.com/schedule/schedule_2004_fall.htm

"Jayne's Mom" is of course a silly humorous example but she represents the tie in to the original series that could bind the stories together. All we know of Jayne's Mom is the letter he got in "the message" and the goofy orange hat. No other Firefly references are necessary. Even a JW story based on the Cobbs would beat Andromeda!

Are you really going to be satisfied waiting until April 2005 for the next installation of Firefly? And another 2 or 3 years for a sequel *IF* Serenity is successful? Don't get me wrong, I am glad its coming but that is a lot of IFs and a mighty thin tea!

ooo FOX!

Andrew Lynch

PS, You gotta admit "At Home with the Cobbs" does sound like fun!

At Home with the Cobbs would only be fun if it was a live broadcast and had Live ammo.
