Oh my god, another Stardust fan. I couldn't get anyone to go with me and went alone because I had a feeling about it. Saw it, loved it and wanted to shout it out loud how dumb my friends were for not seeing my enthusiasm for this film.
I've gotten the same feeling for Kick-Ass the moment I finished watching the trailer. I did a Keanu - whoa! what was that! - saw the trailer 2 more times and began patiently waiting for opening day (April 16th); meanwhile I googled everything Kick-Ass director, actors etc.
Seriously, Stardust was so much fun. Deniro as a gay pirate - ok Depp started it, but who'd have thought of it - not me. Not in a million years.

Plus narration by Ian McKellen, David Kelly as the guard of the wall, Mark Strong (love that guy!), Mark Heap (Spaced anyone?), Mark Williams as Billy, so much great stuff! Pretty sure it just came out on BluRay, looking forward to finally adding it to my collection. It deserves it.

Count me as a fan too.
I mainly watched it because of the Neil Gaiman connection and whilst I always thought it looked okay I wasn't expecting to much from it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it better than I first thought.
Looking forward to Kick-Ass.
It seems to have that Tarantino factor in that it has a certain 'coolness' about it.

There are certain movies that I just have to see on opening night. Sometimes because I want to see the 'big event' film before others get a chance to hype up or play down it's impact. Sometimes it's a film that may have a big twist and I don't want to be spoiled by comments, reviews etc after it's opened.
Like you it's based on what I feel is must see movie, not what promotions or others tell me.

This is exactly the same for me. I'll see a film opening day if I think it looks like absolute perfection, or if I don't want to have people spoil it for me (big twist or not, often it's just that, like Kick Ass, I don't want my friends to be quoting it for ages before I see it).
It usually will be based on the trailers I've seen, moreso than the talent/story, simply because that is the best representation I have of the film.
Avatar for me was an opening day film, and I knew it had to be, as I attended Avatar Day, and that cemented in my mind, even though the trailer was mediocre, that the film would be wonderful. Which I thought it was.
Shutter Island was an opening day film because of the talent involved, the trailer, and the fact that I didn't want anyone to spoil it.
Next Opening Day film for me will be Book of Eli (maybe), Iron Man 2, or Toy Story 3. Cannot wait.

It's REALLY annoying.
Other times, if they do poorly in the US, we don't get a cinema release at all.
Anyone seen Stay? Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Ryan Gosling? Yeah. Didn't do well at US, so we got it for one week. Luckily I saw that opening night, and loved it. Another good reason to go opening night - for those small movies you're not sure will last long!

Didn't realise you were from the land down under. That sucks having to wait so long.
Actually we get the similar treatment in the UK but it's generally not as bad as what I've heard you Aussies have to put up with and these days the bigger releases tend to be the same day or within a couple of weeks. Less well known films tend to suffer though and as you say may not even appear at the cinema.
