Maybe I was overreacting by saying you guys were overreacting. (maybe it's contagious)

I was partally (not sure which part) trying to play devils advocate. I guess it failed, and I'll leave that stuff up to Chrisisall from now on.

I was going to write more, but I think Mal4Prez summed it up pretty good.

Oh fine here's what I wrote, if only for the exercise:

IIRC ('cause the thread this issue's about is 161 posts long now, and I don't want to wait 5 min for the thing to load. (dialup and all)), Gino wrote what he did, about US should get attacked, out of frustration about how the US Gov't keeps going around the world mucking up works and then not having to suffer any consequences.

Also, he was trying to get your attention/provoke a response (he dug a hole).

Then when someone (Niki) was ACTUALLY appalled at the idea (rained in the hole), he didn't know how to react.

So he did what some people in the "tunnel of passon" (like tunnel vision), he made the situation worse by going on a borderline PN rant, about how killing/maiming some Americans could evoke good policy change. (I don't remember many major changes after the Ok City bombing.)

That's about as far as I got.

If you are still reading this thread Gino, I really do hope you decide to stay.

I've enjoyed reading your posts for the past three years. I appreciate your writings on foreign affairs and I have learned quite a bit from them and your discussions with others here.

I notice you have been here almost from the beginning. Almost 8 years. wow.

You are needed on the crew.

Frem, Right on.

Mal4, also right on. Every word you wrote could have come out of my mouth and it explains fully how I feel.

Quote:

I certainly did not think he believed it to start. ... What I thought he meant was something else that I completely agreed with, and I told him so. He was immediately argumentative. At every step of the way it's been as if he's trying to convince me that this "kill America" thing is indeed his truest feelings. And he's gotten downright nasty about it.
That was precisely my experience as well; I’ve never thought badly of Gino and I’ve appreciated what he’s had to say. When he started to go off on this tangent, as I said, I AGREED with him—I tried to point out some perspective that all empires behave as America has, and some other things for perspective, but after that he focused entirely on me seemingly and repeatedly said that EACH OF US is responsible for what America has done/is doing, and that WE should be judged and held accountable for it...then started in with his “bomb America” stuff. No matter how many times I told him I agreed with what he was saying except for the bombing/violence part, he came back at me as dismissing the lost lives and essentially saying I deserved to die, because I’m American.

The list I mentioned with “Gino: Canadian, hates Americans” is just that: I have trouble remembering where people come from and if they’re male or female, so I started keeping a list. Aging brain and all that. I haven’t even NEEDED to add PN to the list, he’s all too obvious with every post. But I added “hates Americans” after this exchange so I could remember where he was coming from. There are NO negative comments on anyone else on that list, and I only added that comment to remind myself when something he posted bothered me.

The only place I disagree with Mal4 is about the stalking and defending myself. I do defend myself, but in this case only when he misrepresented me (which he did a LOT in the thread in question), and I don’t feel defensive about threats of dogging my posts, I knew it wouldn’t go on long, nobody has that kind of obsessive determination. I feel sorry for him, especially after what Rahlm wrote. I didn’t know any of that. At first I believed

Gino has been a very reasonable person in the past, but something has obviously set him off
too, which is why I tried to reason with him.It got way out of hand, and my efforts to clarify and bring perspective to the thread only made it worse.

goes for me as well; in fact if anyone ever even tries to meet me halfway, my instinct is to immediately back off and be sympathetic. Anyone who’s been here for a while might have noticed that. Gino just kept getting more and more vicious.

Rahl, have you written or spoken to Gino? Do you know that what you wrote is accurate?
Quote:

Gino wrote what he did, about US should get attacked, out of frustration about how the US Gov't keeps going around the world mucking up works and then not having to suffer any consequences.
If that’s so, it’s understandable...and like I said, I SHARE that frustration; a number of us talked about it at length, and it’s been agreed upon by many in many threads.

If that’s true, I can understand it. What is missing there is that I FELL in the hole he had dug, I didn’t rain in it; I took him seriously and tried to reason with him—perhaps badly—by saying over and over that I agreed with his frustration, it was only the call for violence that I thought

Gino has been a very reasonable person in the past, but something has obviously set him off. Seems pointless to treat what, on the face of it, is an obvious lapse as the new Gino.

Back in the months after 9/11 one of my dearest friends wrote on his blog that the United States should bomb Mecca and Medina. I was shocked. I had one phone conversation with him about it, it went terribly, and then I let him go for a while.

I wish folk on the internet would do that more often. I wish Gino coulda brought himself to ignore Nikki, even when she wrote "Canadian: hates Americans." I wish Nikki coulda given it a rest instead of reading him the riot act. I really wish Story hadn't resorted to WWF trash talking--"grow a pair"--sheesh.

I'm sorry for picking on you. It was not my intent. You were just what amounted to the designated driver at the party, so I talked to you hoping to get the clearest reception, y'know?

When people cry "bully" I tend to take them seriously, at least on a subjective level. It's like crying for me, if someone starts crying, I generally stop everything and see what I can do. Sometimes, it ain't much.

I hope you will consider any ass-riding from me in these last couple posts as a lapse in otherwise sterling judgment on my part.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Hi HK. I was pretty hot when I wrote that last night - knew it and tried to tone it down, I'm sorry it was snippy anyway. The last thing I want to do is get in another spat with someone I generally agree with. Thank you for being all calm with the reply. I saw it this morning - couldn't reply from school, but was very glad that no new storm was brewing.

Yeah, and likely I was mad because you have a point. I really could have stopped from getting involved with this. Didn't let go of it soon enough when I saw where it was heading. Wish I had. I hate to think I've made a permanent enemy of Gino. I hope not.

Rue posted something on another thread that made me think. She finds herself getting in debates with him even when she fundamentally agrees. I think that's happened here. Even if me and Gino will never agree that we agree, or maybe never use the same words, I think we have very similar ideas.

Anyhow, hope it's really done with. I'm regretting that I addressed him in the Iraq video thread. Seemed like a preventive thing to me. I was imagining what he might come into that thread with, given stuff going on elsewhere in RWED. My "preventive measure" did not improve the situation. Lesson to me.

Hope Gino's not gone. Hope we can interact peacefully in the future. Guy's got a wicked good sense of humor.

Niki - love you maaaaan! Hugs!

I actually don't care whether Gino sees me as an enemy or not, as long as we can be civil and debate or discuss at least fairly reasonably...he's entitled to his feelings about me, whatever they may be, but I never did and never WILL see him as MY enemy. Only one of those I consider I got is PN...and maybe RL...

Anyone in touch with him, tell Gino to come back. Whatever he feels, I for one will pretend none of it happened and go from here, and I think most everyone else will, too. If he's been here that long, he's PART of us, dammit!

Just to be clear: I NEVER asked Gino to leave, nor did I want him to. Ever.

Awww, and hugs to you, too, Mal4; tho' you might wanna say "gal"...I'm female, man. You're one of my favorite ppl here (although that's a rather big bunch, so it's not a really huge compliment ). You're another, Cav, but dammit, it's NIKI, darlin'!
