There's a big difference between Star Wars and Firefly. Star Wars is an industry, it's a machine. Firefly is, to a great extent, still one man's dream.

All the Star Wars novels, comics, video games, etc, ARE canon, but there's a whole structure of canon, with the movies on top. (In other words, it basically boils down to "You can assume everything you've read in the books is completely true, unless it conflicts with the movies; then, the movies win").

Although George Lucas does not personally approve every piece of Star Wars fiction, there's a whole section at LucasFilm that DOES.

Firefly, on the other hand, has been very personal for Joss. Although he hasn't written every word of it, he has been intimiately involved with every official product. If a Firefly/Serenity product comes out, I think it's safe to assume that Joss is aware of it and has sanctioned its content (therefore making it canon, at least for now).

The alternative is that Joss no longer cares enough about Firefly to worry about each story... which would mean the war is over and we lost. :(

I've only had time to skip it, but he notes that each page needed to be sent to 7 people for approval, and Joss was one of them. So, definitely on Joss's radar; definitely approved by Joss... that makes it canon.

That definition of canon is just silly to me. "What you're reading is true unless it's not". Oh...great. What?

Either something is official and true or it's not IMO. I consider the expanded universe to be a whole different timeline than the movies. It's like a "what if" type of spin off to me. I never expect George Lucas to write anything with Han and Leia having twin children or using Mara Jade as a character. They're make believe to him.

It sounds to me like this comic might fall in the same realm. "Go ahead and create some characters who were old friends of Wash's. I'll never reference them in anything I have planned. So, go nuts." Obviously that's just a hunch. I haven't heard from Joss directly.

I'm simplifying the definition of canon, but it comes down to whether the work is essentially paid fanfic or not. If something is considered canon, it's not.

Please see the edit to my message above. If Joss is approving every page of artwork of this thing, he clearly cares about it. It's not a blow-off.

On the other hand, if the comic meets with success, it might be an opportunity for a spinoff comic and group of characters, which would allow folk to explore the 'Verse while still leaving the crew of Serenity untouched for the future.

Potentially, a very good approach.

It's all make believe to everyone. Not to undermine your point, Zeek I agree with you. Canon or not, it's all fiction and you can choose to read or not to read and then to believe it fictionally "happened" or to ignore it. I don't know why scifi fans do this. People getting upset about the new Battlestar or the new Star Trek undermining the old. Both stories exist, as stories! I didn't like the new Trek so I choose to ignore it. I like both new and old Battlestar, I think of them as being different takes on the same story. No one argues about whether or not Bronte would have approved of Wide Sargasso Sea as canon in the Jane Eyre universe or not. Just read it and enjoy it. It's all fiction!

That said, I look forward to Patton Oswalt's comic.

Lucas has signed off on Mara Jade as officially pat of the universe - as he has on all the post film books. He's not directly involved with them, but he does have approval. It was his idea to kill Chewie, for one.

And think of it as silly if you like - it's still the way it is. That stuff is canon unless Lucas does something that contradicts it. But since he's made the only timeframes he wants to play in off limits to other writers, there's really very little chance of there being much conflict anymore.
