Comedian Patton Oswalt is continuing where "Serenity" left off in a new comic titled "Serenity: Float Out," which focuses on the aftermath of Wash's death.

Patton Oswalt, FTW!!
One thing I love about Firefly: the 'verse does need to center around Serenity, per se.

Very interesting. I believe that this will be the first canon post-Serenity story we have.

Is it signed sealed and approved canon by Joss? I don't see that anywhere. Joss might have let him write the comic, but that doesn't necessarily make it canon IMO.
Also it sounds like none of our crew is involved in the story. Except Wash of course. Sort of just a comic to explore Wash's past.

Seems a reach, given to think it's anything but. Joss has an ongoing relationship with the publisher. They're not going to do a story that's unsanctioned and risk loosing a relationship with a moneymaker.

Darkhorse publishes a bunch of Buffy comics that aren't in the season 8 series. They seem more like they're sanctioned but not canon to me.
George Lucas sanctions all the expanded universe books but he doesn't consider them canon. I don't think he's insulted by them either. They're not mutually exclusive.

Hmm, a fair point. But Star Wars and Buffy - which have a wealth of side material is not the same as Firefly/Serenity, which has a far more limited scope.

IMO, someone above was right. It doesn't look like it involved our friends on Serenity directly, but introduces us to a cast of characters who knew Wash and are starting their own adventure. This sounds like the first canon (as I believe they wouldn't do this without Joss's approval) step to expanding the 'verse to new stories.
Which, as much as I love Mal and his crew, is a good thing. As long as there isn't an open channel to explore those stories in live action, I think Joss will only fumble around with back stories and filler material in the comics. If it were my brain child and had this amazing bond with the actors that worked so well together, it would be hard to push on very far in a non-acting medium such as comics. If you ask me he's hovering in the hopes a chance to resurrect the story with Nathan, Adam, Morena, Gina, Summer, Jewel and Sean arises.
This however, allows for characters to explore the 'verse without every really inhibiting the tales of Serenity. Unless the new crew manage to blow up a planet or his tales involve major upheavel in the alliance.
