Father? "Search your feelings..."

Sorry Calhoun - for some reason I don't always get notices for threads I've posted in...I'm still here and I'm still very interested!

No I haven't -

http://crackle.com/c/Trenches

just watched the first one - it's nice, I like. Kind of hard watching on a small screen, some people fall in love with handheld just a bit much... other than that great job on an Indy budget, looking forward to seeing the rest.

Thx for keeping an eye out for this one Calhoun!

Calhoun - k, I tried some cludges so you could maybe see the vids - no luck (they're way ahead of me).

I just finished watching the 10 mini eps and here are my impressions:

There's a pretty good story in there and some noteworthy accomplishments from cast and crew/director and music. Hell of a thing to pull together for people without a studio or network backing (although I believe ABC was attached at some point, which makes me skeptical of why they're on "Crackle" - they must have lost faith).

There are also plenty of plot holes though, and cliched story points, and SyFy bad special effects.
I thought the edits were way too quick (that's what you do to cover low budget effects and create the sense of action - over used here) and the shooting style was much too jerky, over use of handheld. You never get to stop and consider the characters.

Crackle's "HD" quality was pretty bad on my screen, not sure what HD really means on the internet any more!

I think this could have been greatly improved with seasoned writers and a studio/network helping them step over and around some of the more glaring things that didn't work.

Overall, congrats to everyone involved, I was entertained, I'd like to see more.

Hey Pizmobeach,

Thanks for thinking of me but no joy on that link.. i'll just wait patiently

Also appreciate your review and thoughts on the series. Sounds about where I expected considering budgets etc. Shane Felux usually puts something pretty darn good on screen though.

I have seen it, and sorry for not responding earlier Calhoun.

I agree w/ PizmoBeach that "Trenches" is a fun watch and well worth the efforts to see it. The story is good, the acting solid, the direction was well done, and a lot of love went into this project. For an indy film, with no support from a studio, I think it is well done.

Now, as Pizmo pointed out, there are some low points, so in the spirit of review, but taking nothing away from the efforts of any involved, here they are.

I noticed the plot holes, as Pizmo mentioned, and the special effects are fairly bad at points. Made for television SyFy bad. Again this is most likely due to the lack of a big budget and pro equipment for effects, but it is nonetheless a sticking point. I also agree that the shooting style was a bit jerky and tedious.

I agree that Crackle might not be the best way to view Trenches. I had issues with the viewing quality as well and that lessened my enjoyment a bit.

Pizmo is spot on that seasoned writers and the backing of a studio/network could have helped to really flesh out the characters a bit better and enhanced the special effects and camera work for an overall better product. Again, this is not meant to take away anything from those whose efforts helped to realize this series as it is a good piece for indy filming.

Did I enjoy it? I most certainly did. Will I watch if they do more? Yep, sure will. Overall I'd give it a B with an A for effort.
