I dunno - All of Cash's "American" series leaves me awestruck. "Hurt" most especially.
And I'll be drawn and quartered in Austin if I leave out Willie Nelson.

ah, willie nelson evidences your good taste, belied by your appreciation of "hurt." no matter what you hear, musical taste is not subjective: some musical experience just objectively suck, and this includes listening to the once glorious cash stumble his way through a trent reznor song.
also, how did i neglect to mention hank williams (sr., not hank-the-lesser-and-bearded) and bob wills?

I have a fairly eclectic taste in music, including some country artists. It is odd that I don't care for most of what is produced today by the bigger names, but I have a fond place in my heart for some of the classics like Hank Williams (Sr., Jr. and III), Hank Snow, Faron Young, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker, etc. And is there anybody who doesn't like Patsy Cline?
Steve Earle is my current fave, and he does do some country but it is usually tempered with a blues/rock hybrid sound. I also like Todd Snyder, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, etc.
My favorite group of all time also could be considered a country/rock (and everything else) hybrid. That would be The Band. In the same vein and from roughly the same era I loved Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Pure Prairie League, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Doc and Merle Watson, Jesse Winchester, Arlo Guthrie, John Hartford, and on and on.

Your post hit very dear to my heart and triggered some great old memories for me. Thank you. I saw Poco in concert around 6 or 7 times during their great run in the early 70's. I probably listened to Deliverin' 1000 times in those days. My girlfriend at the time was completely obssessed with Poco. All the bands you mentioned are legendary.
