Wash knew. Hense his chant,"A leaf in the wind."
He was destined, and he knew it, to end. His chant had nothing to do with his flying, he was alreay the best and no one else could have done it. It means, like the leaf, he was to be blown without control to his final act on the stage. Got sort of Shakespearian there, but you get the idea.
