Were you all Sci-Fi fans before Firefly?

I just followed Buffy... and Joss.
That made me a Firefly-Fan. I think it's just this familiar thingy that Joss always puts in his shows, the depth of the characters, the excellent castings, everything - and that made me a Joss-Junkie from the first moment on. What I most love on Firefly is that mixture of Western and SciFi (never expected it would work...*g*) - I always have been (and still am, of course) a Western-Fan, so Joss caught me once again...

I'd been a longtime Star Trek and Star Wars fan, and had gotten into Babylon 5, but was never much of what you'd call a 'mainstream' SF fan before Firefly came along. Of course, I already was a huge BtVS fan, so watching Firefly was a no-brainer for me given who its creator is.

At the same time Classic Star Trek was in re-runs in 1971, my oldest sister was full-time babysitter for my brother and me. She had missed a deadline for school, so she took the year to look after us. So she was the one who plunked us both down in front of the TV while the show was on and said, "Watch this." Later on we also watched Battlestar: GALACTICA, and there was one memorable late night when we watched "Buckaroo Banzai." Mom still has the Enterprise-A floating in the front entry of the house. Since then there's been Babylon 5, FarScape, Andromeda (when it was still good), Stargate... basically if it has a sci-fi/fantasy theme, I'll give it a looksee. TV series get two chances with me.

I read Anne MacAffrey's Drangonrider series when I was 12, and I still have the original paperback printings of the first Han Solo Series. I think I was 16 when those came out. At the moment I'm reading Terry Goodkind.

Is it a genetic pre-disposition? Yeah, I'd have to say so. Not that there wasn't just a little teensy bit of brain-washing involved.

I've been a Sci-fi fan ever since I was a little boy. (books as well as movies)

I was six when I saw Star Trek (syndication) on our family's little black and white TV. To this day, I cannot see the original Enterprise without feeling my heart race a little. Not surprisingly, Star Wars was also a huge event in my life. (My parents got me the soundtrack one year for Christmas - it was the first purely musical score I had ever owned and the only gift I would remember from that year - and I listened to it for hours and hours on end, memorizing passages and reliving the movie in my head. (It was a pre-VCR world!! *gasp!*)

I work in a technical field, troubleshooting semiconductor equipment, so my head is fairly grounded, but to this day, good sci-fi refreshes my spirit. The night I saw the movie "Contact", I was walking out of the theater to my car when I suddenly just stopped in my tracks. I looked up at the night sky, and I knew that in some great, unfathomable and wonderous way, the universe had just changed. The enormity of the realization will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I never saw Firefly on TV. I'm sorry to say that I cut off the cable a year earlier just because of the drek that was on and how much time I spent watching it. (Or paying the cable company even when I wasn't watching it.)

Then a friend loaned me his DVD's and said: "When you don't LOOK, you don't FIND!"(Sometimes he's a sanctimonious twit ). I watched the first two episodes and was hooked. I waited impatiently for my first non-busy weekend and spent that whole Saturday in front of the TV watching the series from start to finish. (I even ordered pizza in so that I wouldn't have to cook.)

I've since bought my own set (and one to pass around) and still love watching. But here's the funny thing...sometimes when I'm out at a video store, I'll find myself irrationally looking to see if I've somehow slipped into a different world where they haven't cancelled Firefly and that somehow there's a second or even third boxed set sitting on a shelf waiting for me.

You know, April seems like such a long ways away, but I get this feeling that it'll be just like coming home.

I haven't been a huge fan of Sci Fi. I was into Star Trek to a point (mostly TNG), and Star Wars. Nothing too big. Enjoyed Quantum Leap, Sliders and X-Files. I have enjoyed Sci Fi movies and the occasional book.

But my first love and obsession was Farscape (and I still do love it) and then Firefly came along and I was in love all over again. I still love them both very much.

I've been a sf fan all my life, I think. Has anybody else noticed Star Trek in various flavors just not being satisfying after exposure to Firefly? The endings always seem too pat now.

Gosh ... yes! I'm old enough to remember much of the first-run of TOS Star Trek. The only other show I would consider myself a 'fan' in the 'fanatic' sense re: TV/movie SF was the old Doctor Who stuff (pre-Sylvester McCloy). Otherwise, Firefly is the first time I've gotten particularly worked up about something on TV/movies. Usually, my fandom has been reserved entirely for written works.

I am a huge fan of classic short SF. One of the few writers I also adore for long works is Frank Hebert. I believe I now have a copy of everything he had published, although I could be yet surprised ... I came across a short SF piece of his in an old anthology just a few weeks ago that I'd never run into before.

Let's just say I'm on a first-name basis with many of the second-hand bookshop managers in town here. And thank G-d my attic library has a gazillion shelves!
