Wow...they have baby monitors that do that? That's cool.
It's easy for me to say that I wouldn't overreact 'cause I don't have kids. Who really knows what I'd do? I am a proponent of 'dirt don't hurt' etc. I wouldn't want my sick friends around my baby EVER, and especially not right at first.

What the bleeeeeeeep!? If I saw someone hanging knives on their baby mobile I'd be calling child protective services the second I got out of that dude's house. What in the world is he hanging knives on a mobile for?

Kinda with Zeek on the Child Protective Services... also with you on the a little dirt doesn't hurt. You have to let them have exposure to things or their immune systems don't develop.
Yes they have baby monitors that do that... they even have ones with video and night vision settings.

Well, to be fair to the guy (as much as it pains me) they are mini pocket knives that fold up, so if they fall, they aren't going to cut anything. The danger comes when they don't realize son is quite as dexterious as he is and is able to open one of the knives accidentally.
beware: [rant]
Father is a real piece of work. In love with weapons of most kinds. Has knives and swords all over the house (baby's first halloween costume? Hand Grenade). Spends all his free time playing violent games online with his buddies. He almost killed their cat when he threw it across the room into a wall because it got on the bed. Sigh. I can't stand him (obviously). My friend just lets him be. She was miserable for awhile, contemplated leaving him, but made a different choice. ( <--- understatement of the year. ) Sadly, I've had to take a 'you chose stay in this bed so you better make the best of it' approach.' She is never going to be happy with him, but is too afraid to leave him.
She had a very difficult pregnancy, was on bed rest from 23 weeks on. While husband did somethings right, he couldn't even manage to turn the sprinklers on outside or mow the lawn. His MOTHER came over and did it once in awhile. All my friend's work in the yard went to waste...because he couldn't turn the sprinklers on. She gave birth at 34 weeks and hubbie was pretty much, 'lets have another' right away.
He does very little parenting...other than the fun stuff. [/end rant]

I'm constantly baffled how guys like that end up married. Do they just hide their giant flaws just long enough to get a ring on her finger? I would be shocked if they could hide such huge inadequacies for long enough.

[/lurk to briefly join conversation]
Quote:Precisely the problem (though any kind of weapon near a baby is BAAAAAAD idea [/massive understatement]). I'd ask "wtf is he thinking??" but he's not thinking is the reality. She really needs to get herself and her child faaaaaaaaaar away from that man, but it's a very tough thing for anyone to do in that kind of situation.

Zeek: I wonder how people like that can become *parents* nevermind husbands. When it comes to a parent doing blatantly stupid shit I'm a proponent of the 'people should be made to take an IQ test (that includes common sense as a major portion) before they're allowed to have children' platform ><;; But I'm as baffled as you on the whole hiding their inadequacies thing.
MsA: echoing several other people on this thread, they have baby monitors for breathing and movement??? Where did you get it? (it's actually a pretty good idea if you think about it)

I'm baffled how a guy such as him could nab such a wonderful girl as my friend.
I really think in his case a lot of it was the 'culture' of their courtship. They met and dated during college, married soon after. All of this was around a group of friends that was very close knit...and most of whom married each other. Those people have all moved away and it's just my friend and the husband. I've seen him around their friends...and he's a very different person. There is some charm there...that is the only time I can understand how she ended up with him.
Friend is also living her parent's life a bit, what was modelled to her. Her mom and dad basically lived separate lives, including separate residences for much of her life. The first time she told me about them and I was like 'is either one having an affair.' She was surprised I would think that. Well, two years later they were getting divorced, complete shock to friend, and there was infidelity on both sides. I really hope friend isn't setting herself up for that as well, but with limited emotional connection to her hubby, one of them is bound to meet someone who they do connect with (is open for that connection) and it's going to be hard to stay in a loveless (or little love) marriage. Sigh.

WOW Rugbug sounds like your friend is one of those people who likes to maintain a state of denial about how bad things really are. It's easier to retreat than deal.
Still I'd keep an eye on that kid. Any unexplained injuries or nervous behavior and I'd suggest you call CPS.
FLT I got it on Amazon, but you can get it in most baby stores. It's expensive but I figure peace of mind is worth it.
LOL Gorram... that and baby swing ( I love whoever invented the baby swing)

When my friends got their first child they went out and got a baby swing. The marvel of the 20th century.
