Were you all Sci-Fi fans before Firefly?

I was just wondering if the majority of Browncoats are also Trekkies, Star Wars fans, etc. or am I the norm and Firefly reaches the unreachable.

I started out reading Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom novels and Heinlein juveniles at the age of 6; been reading SF for years. Saw the original Star Trek on a black and white portable when it was first on the air.

Not usually a TV watcher anymore, but still reading.

I am 50 yrs old and I have been reading SF since I was in the third grade. I love SF and Fantasy and I play D&D too. When I was around 12 I even wrote a letter to NBC to save Star Trek cause at the time it really was the best on TV. I loved Buffy and Angel and I knew that Firefly would be quality from the get go but I had a feeling that it wouldn't get renewed cause Fox does not have a good history when it comes to SF. I enjoyed Brisco County Jr. and Strange Luck and thought they had great potential but naturally Fox cancelled them before they could come into their own. So I wasn't surprised that Firefly was cancelled ( disappointed but not surprised). Stargate, Babylon 5, all the Trek series but nothing really can compare to books but Firefly was THE BEST.

I definitely have a soft spot for sci-fi and TNG was my introduction to it. My experience of science fiction comes mainly from tv and movies. I’ve read sci-fi books less than I would have liked.

I was never a true fan of anything until Firefly. It’s the only tv-series I own as DVD. Other series I’ve seen and liked I’ve used mainly as entertainment, nothing more. In my history as a tv-viewer no other show has managed to bring this kind of affection, love and dedication out of me.

always liked it but have never really been loyal to any particular series until recently. have just started to get interested in many of the book series that are available, though.

Not only am I a science fiction fan, but I also adore space-opera, which is why I love Firefly so much. (I've yet to see television do science fiction; it's all space opera; sf wouldn't play very well on TV)

Some of my favorite sf authors are Sarah Zettel, Octavia Butler, John Varley, Robert Sawyer, and Steven Harper. Okay, Harper's my favorite, but only because I married him. :-) My favorite space-opera author is Lois McMaster-Bujold, although her stuff could be considered sf, too. The lynch-pin of her universe is a technological advancement. Her stories, characters and civilizations are heavily dependent on the uterine-replicator, though she does not get into the science of how they work.

And to be honest, Harper's SILENT EMPIRE series is space-opera as opposed to sf. His Lance Michaels series, short as it was, was sf, however.

So yes, I've loved sf *and* space opera for a very long time.

The oldest memory I have is sitting beside my dad (mom was asleep, cause it was night) in our cottage/trailer, watching Return of the Jedi on our staticcy little TV. (All I really remember is being hypnotized by all the bright colours in the space-battle/lightsaber duel).

Years later, I had to go on a plane ride with mom (can't rightly recall where dad was). To keep me quiet, she gave me my first "grown up" novel. Star Trek: TNG #5 Strike Zone, by Peter David.

Been hopelessly hooked (both on Star Trek and on David's works --the guy's like Joss, only in text) ever since.

So yeah, I've been a sci-fi fan for a while.

I've always enjoyed Sci-fi. When I was a little kid, my dad took me to see "Star Wars" on it's ORIGINAL run and it blew me away. I had ALL the toys, waited in line for the next two movies, etc.

My dad and I would watch the reruns of the original Star Trek, the first run of Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers. I loved "Farscape", but stopped watching after Zhaan died. I love SG-1, but never have the time to watch it religiously. I've read dozens of Star Trek novels and many Star Wars novels. I've watched much of every ST series. . .

But I've NEVER gone to what some consider the stereotypical 'fan' extreme. The only time I ever dressed in costume for Sci-Fi was when I was a little kid for halloween in costumes my mom made me. I've been to a convention or two, but never regularly, nor when it wasn't ridiculously convenient. I've NEVER EVER been registered on a fansite for any sci-fi show.

That all changed when I finished the last disc of the Firefly DVD set that I bought on a WHIM at the PX in Kandahar. I immediately went online and found this site. . .I've located and purchased stuff for costuming purposes, toyed around with fan fiction, put a countdown timer for the BDM on my desktop and I have an entire folder on my computer devoted to ANY fanvids or cool images relating to Firefly.

It's a sickness, but such a delightful sickness it is.

I am 40 years old, and have been a sci-fi fan since I could remember. I remember not wanting to trick-or-treat because Star trek was on. I also remember in the second grade saving my milk money to buy Andre Norton books, instead of milk. I give just about every sci fi show a chance to see if it is any good. A few exceed my expectations, X-Files, DS9 (in my opinion the best ST, because things evolved, and it had an arcing storyline)Farscape and of course Firefly are among those. A lot don't, but I won't list them. In the end, it isn't just writing that is important, but the casting. They really just picked all perfect people for Firefly, they just work. Of course, I am not dissing Joss, writing is still important.

My story is very similar to Static's.

My dad took me to see Star Wars. My mom, being the avid reader, gave me lots of classic sci-fi books. As a family, we would watch all the sci-fi shows on tv. I've seen all the Treks, but alas, I don't own cable so all the other great shows you guys talk about are completely off my radar. On our first date, my guy even made me pass a sci-fi quiz before he'd go out with me again--four years ago. He gave me the Firefly dvds as a present and then I found this place. My first registered fandom.
