I'm goin' with Masterpiece, but I've heard other points of view.
What's yours?

Neither. It's not BAD, but it's not great, either. It's in that category of films about which I say, "Yup, that was definitely a movie. Of all the movies I've ever seen, that counts as one of them."
Honestly, I found HBO's "Rome" series to be much more involving, and it even sticks to actual historical events.

It put me to sleep in the movie theater when I saw it. I've seen it on HBO a few times since then, and it is indeed a great movie. I cannot say masterpiece, like say Spartacus or Ben Hur, but it is a great and powerful movie with terrific acting performances and effects. It's one of those movies that gets better upon each new viewing for me.

I think it's unbelievably well photographed. And totally keys into that part of me that would do exactly the same thing if I were him, which sort of automatically makes it NOT a chick flick.
Guysploitation. Makes me cry every time.

I would say neither. It's an overblown revenge flick, but a very well made one. But it's far from the top of my list of favorite Scott or Crowe films, and I've never felt the need to re-watch it.

Gotta agree with that.
I'm not sure I'd quite consider it a masterpiece. But I love it for the imagery, the cinematography, the spectacle, the score, the epicness (My name is..blah blah blah...father to a murdered son...blah blah blah....and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.) and also for the great cast (mainly Crowe, Phoenix, and Harris.)
It's a great film, but it's not one that is just so perfect that I can watch it over and over again. But it IS a great film.
