I often think these people who are so "shocked" by their neighbors wrongdoing are 1) not paying attention, and 2) isolated in their own little worlds, too much to actually know anything about their neighbors. The most often exclamation of shock I've seen is "but they seemed so quiet, I passed them on the street one or twice and they seemed nice." It's still an issue of apathy and people becoming more and more cut-off from their fellow humanity because of the system we've built and the way things are heading.

The people bearing false testimony against their neighbors is another issue, but related and equally ingrained in our society. It's the sociopathic tendencies we've been developing because turning in other people gets us something WE want. Maybe we don't like them, and it's pure retribution spite, maybe we want their house, their wife/husband, their job. There's always motivation in cases like this.

But really, to do this to someone, to do wrong just because we don't like someone or because it's for our own gain is obviously not good. I think people could rise above some of these jealous tendencies if they weren't ENCOURAGED by society to have them. What we need to be encouraging is empathy. If you can imagine the consequences of your behaviour, and also imagine how it might affect YOU in that place, then people I think would not be so quick to take advantage of other people.

But yeah, much as I am a staunch defender of the right to bear arms, it really has jack damn all to do with why Switzerland or anyone else is less violent than us - it's mostly that they are CULTURALLY less violent than us, and american mental health and social interaction is amongst the most horrifying on the planet to anyone who really understands those issues on a wider scope.
