There are a few good points here. Playing devil's advocate is never a good idea, but I think in this case there is no cause for name calling on either side.
Face it, what they do (including Ms. Glau) is their job. Of course they're delighted you're delighted with them--who wouldn't be? It's also great PR.
On the other side of the coin, I think there are many in the entertainment industry who care for their fans as more than just a source of praise and a paycheck. They do feel the awesome power and fun of sharing creative things with other people "out there", and in some way grasp the other person's joy in it, less the self-praising aspects.

I have gotten the impression that the Firefly cast and crew are more in touch with the fans largely because they are in fact also fans, of the show, the characters, the Verse. Summer particularly was, by most accounts, spoiled by the fact that her first series role was is such a great production as Firefly - few actors can boast such a grand beginning of career.
I actually take less salt with comments from the BDHs because I actually think they are sincere. If kingelbert is a browncoat, then I would consider him the exception among the group.
Where the same comment from Warren Beatty, Alec Baldwin, Clint Black, Don Johnson, I would be more suspect.

Agreed, from all the video I've seen of Summer, and, for that matter, of all the BDH, it's apparent to me that they appreciate the 'Verse and all that comes with it - especially Summer (who to me is a sweetheart).
A true browncoat would know that.
