Favourite longish scene?

Mine's Jayne in the airlock. I love Mal's speech, and Jayne trying to excuse what he did, and how Mal really was willing to walk away and let Jayne die, and how Jayne asks him not to tell the others what he did. It's the reason I like the episode so much.

Thanks everyone for your great responses. I love all the scenes you mentioned and some might even push one out of my top three. I'll have to give it some thought. Anyway here are my rambling, not very interesting responses to your suggestions (feel free to ignore the following).

Not to mention when River's almost burnt at the pole bit. The whole speech, Simon holding onto his sister (brings me to tears just thinking about it), all the way up to the saving bit. (Safe)
Oh and also Mal and Wash's capture in War Stories. Just them wondering around a room, talking is somehow interesting and exciting to me.

Ooh great answer. The first two hadn't even occurred to me but they are great. I love the War Stories scene: 'Terse, I can be Terse. Once in flight school I was laconic'. Fantastic! The characterisations of Wash and Mal are perfect in this scene in my opinion. That is so exactly what Wash would be like in that sort of situation.

There is one scene that stuck with me from watching it on tv (before I had the advantage of listening to all the background info). That was the whole torture scene with Mal, Wash, and Niska.

The ongoing argument between the two whilst being tortured was amazing and so very, very funny.
This one very, very nearly made my top three. As well as being funny I just love the fact that Mal is trying to keep Wash going. When Mal shouts 'listen to me' I think it's just the perfect moment, it nearly makes me cry. You can tell Mal is in pain (obviously) but he doesn't care about that. This is just a perfect scene and a perfect defining moment for Mal. I also love the way Nathan Fillion plays the later torture scenes after Wash has been rescued; I think he plays it so that there is genuine fear there whilst he's still tryining to maintain the 'smart ass' front. He plays it so he's not gonna let Niska win but he's not so far away from it.

I liked the end of "Serenity" with the conversation between Mal and Simon. It's got the "you ain't weak," "If I kill you," and "We're still flying" quotes.
Yeah this would also make my top five. This has the perfect moment for Browncoats:
'We're still flying. That's not much. It's enough.'

All good choices so far, I couldn't pick a favourite but I'll add one to the list (hope it's considered long enough).
Jayne's interrogation of the Fed (Dobson?) in Serenity, including the initial exchange with Mal (Pain is scary). Very funny throughout.

Yep good scene and long enough too. Sorry about that feel free to say any scene you like I just didn't want to go over the same threads of people's favourite moments and lines and that sort of thing.

This might not fit exactly, but near close enough. In Bushwhacked, when the crew is being interrogated by the commander of the Alliance ship.... it starts off w/ Inara and goes on from crew member to crew member....
You fought with Captain Reynolds in the war.
Zoe: Fought with a lot of people in the war.
And your husband?
Zoe: Fight with him sometimes, too.
All those great responses by Zoe and Wash... " have you ever BEEN with a warrior woman?" ..and then Jayne just sits there...arms folded, defiant..not uttering a gorram word. CLASSIC.

Okay, a couple which haven't been mentioned, I think.
JAYNESTOWN- At the end where Jayne and Mal are talking. Jayne just seems to show some regret/remorse/can't-quite-place-it emotion. Very powerful.
OBEJECTS IN SPACE- The part when River is acting as the ship, the exchange between Jubul and River, with some interjections.
There's a ton of others, but they've been said.

The scene where Simon has Jayne immobilized on the table after he fell and hurt his back, and Simon tells Jayne that he knows what Jayne did, but he'll never, ever harm him when he's in Simon's care. Then River sticks her head in and says "And I can kill you with my brain." The whole scene is good - especially at the beginning when Jayne realizes Simon knows and says "Is there anybody out there?" and River looks at him around the doorway and he says "Anyone else?" in a small voice. All the actors were great in that scene.

I can't believe I forgot about this one also! It's my all-time "technical" favourite ... as in, in any SF I've ever seen/read, I've never heard anyone use the technique of threatening airlock expulsion (with an open exterior port) as a method of keelhauling. Brilliant!

Good choice! I liked Firefly from moment one (obviously), but I distinctly remember this being the scene that made me a browncoat.
