ALL HOPE IS GONE

I've been working on building my library and discovering all kinds of great stuff at lastfm. Slipknot is not in my library. I have discovered quite a few metal bands there that I really enjoy, but the vast majority of them are female-fronted. Basically, I like metal music without the snarly metal vocals, so those soprano singers are, in my opinion, the best thing to happen to metal. if you think Slipknot is the best thing to happen to metal, then go right ahead. And if you don't like any form of metal, that doesn't make you a bad person, either. I don't care, and I'm not here to argue. By the way jameron, you've been acting like you're here to argue and scream about what you think instead of actually discussing anything. That behavior from you may explain some of the reactions you've been getting. If you scream the same thing over and over and over and over, eventually folks will get tired of hearing it and won't want to talk to you anymore. Something to think about.
So I'm going to cruise back to lastfm now, to follow complex chains of tastes to more great music from all time periods that I never knew existed, forgot about, or have always loved and just want to hear over and over. If music is an interest of yours, that might be something you would enjoy as well. And hey, guess what? They have discussion forums there. Specifically for music. Just saying.

Hey Phoenix, could you let me know some of the bands you've been trying lately? What you just described, about liking metal without the snarly vocals, is exactly my problem with it too. I like the music side of things, but the vocals put me right off.
So yeah, any bands that really stuck out with singers that aren't all demonic and whatnot?

Oh! I am happy to share! Nightwish is one of my first loves in that area. They have some gorgeous music. They switched singers recently, but they still have that operatic feel, and Tarja went solo, but pretty much kept with the metal, so look both of those up. Within Temptation is also gorgeous, with some of the lightest vocals I've heard paired with metal. They have the occasional song with the growls, usually exaggerated on the live tracks, but mostly they leave that out. And I have to mention Evanescence, because I think they have some absolutely wonderful metal tracks with some gorgeous vocals, no matter how many people say they're too mainstream Lessee... After Forever is kind of hit-and-miss with the demonic vocals. Their female singer is one of the most talented out there, I think, but about half their songs also have a growler in them. Luca Turilli's Dreamquest, what I can find of it, is amazing. I mean, amazing in that way that can bring tears to your eyes. Edenbridge is wonderful, and so far what I've heard is all angelic female vocals. Just today I ran across Octavia Sperati, which I'm pretty sure is an entirely female metal band, and I am loving them. Stream of Passion, Nemesea, Epica, Chalice, Imperia... all good so far. Oh! And Dragonforce is awesome, with a great non-death-growl male singer. And Markize, if I remember correctly, is female-fronted metal in French, for extra sexiness. Plug any of them in as a station on lastfm or pandora and you'll get all kinds of goodies.

Along with some funny stuff, some alternative rock, hint of blues, some neo-classical (one of my new loves in music), some good old fashioned rock, some classical composers, and some stuff that probably passes for pop. I'm pretty eclectic. I've discovered and re-discovered so much stuff on this site in the last week, I'm just making with the musical bliss right now, I gotta say.

Well now, you do know how to keep me rambling! Neo-classical is... instrumental rock, I guess, would be the best way to put it. Stuff like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore... I know there are tons of others. Basically a bunch of really talented guitarists just going to town. I love it, I really do. I can get so picky about vocals, so it's nice to eliminate those sometimes.
Now blues, I started with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Clapton. Through them discovered Johnny Lang, who is a ridiculously talented young man. I also like what I've heard of Indigenous. And I gotta say that James Marsters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame has a couple screaming blues tracks in his mix; 'When I Was a Baby' and 'Birth of the Blues.' Man has some talent. And don't let anyone tell you I'm biased because I'm like totally in love with him, the talent is genuine

Pleasantly surprised to see Todd Snider mentioned in that crew; I feared he was mostly a "local" act. Met him a few times, and hung out with him at a camp-out once. He's a friend of a guy I used to work with. Todd's a really nice guy in person. Very down to earth and unassuming. And I've actually run into Jimmie Dale Gilmore AND Joe Ely in the freaking Home Depot near my house here in Austin. I never know what to say to famous people, so I just leave 'em alone, figuring that's probably the best thing to do for them. :)

But where's the love for Thelonius Monk?

I used to live in Austin too so I'm familiar with a lot of the local people. I once ran into Jimmie Dale at Sun Harvest and encountered Pat and Barbara MacDonald (Timbuk3) in the emergency room of St. David's South. I could also have mentioned Ely, Lucinda Williams, Ian Moore, Jimmy LaFave, Dale Watson, Alejandro Escavedo, David Garza, Reid Wilson etc. Also could have listed a lot more jazz artists like Monk, Coltrane, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, and on and on.

Phil Ochs is my favorite performer of all time, and The Band my favorite group. I'll listen to almost anything besides rap/hip-hop and Top 40 Pop.

You know, I'd love to see similar sites for recommending books. And movies. They'd have to work a bit differently, but that would be shiny.
