Hi fellow Midlander (whereabouts?),
There are means of getting photos at Collectormania without queuing, go for celebs on the end of the row as they are easy targets and you can also get shots across the row. Tough was foiled when trying to get pic of Joe Pantaliano, steward jumped in front of my shot and gave me long lecture about invation of privacy, will have to be more stealthy next time.
Had a lot of problems at memorabilia especially due to seating arrangements for guests. By putting Eliza Dushku on the corner they created a huge bottleneck as she was by far the most popular guest but I managed to sweettalk a steward into letting me get a shot. I think I may give it a miss in August though unless guests improve.
Are Starfury events worth the money? I may consider going in the future, distraught to have missed Fusion but am a latecomer to Firefly.

Heh. They've obviously changed things a bit since the one I went to (last year) as all the guests were in separate "booths" as far as I could tell, with high dividing screens keeping prying eyes out. I approached from every possible angle but couldn't get a glimpse of a soul

I think I was lucky there. I went on the Sunday, and, early on in the day they were letting people line up and take photos of Eliza in turn from a discreet distance. You didn't have time to compose a good shot, it was a case of step up, take your photo, and step down, but at least I got a reasonably good picture. Later on in the day, they stopped this though, as the stallholder next to the signing had complained about the disruption to his trade, and the fact people were still taking photos through gaps in his displays!
Overall though, I thought the signing was reasonably well managed, apart from as you say the position in the hall. The previous year the guests were all together in an adjoining hall and this worked much better. Arriving at 10.30am, I got one Eliza's final tickets for the day (647 - phew) and got my autographs around 3pm. One thing I was very glad of was the virtual queueing (an idea they nicked off Collectormania, calling up ticket numbers in batches of 50). Had I had to wait in line, I would have been queueing for 5 hours!

Yes, very much so. The ticket price is good value (even the full weekend ticket) given the amount of guests and other activities that are on offer. Sean, the organiser, is a fan himself and he knows exactly what fans want and like, so there's more than enough to keep you occupied for the whole weekend, for an all-in price of about 50-85 pounds. Contrast this with a convention I attended in London last year run by the US company Creation Entertainment, which cost 300 pounds for only 3 guests, all of whom were on briefly (at Starfury cons all the guests usually appear on both days) and nothing else really on offer at all. No video rooms or anything, and the event only ran in the afternoons as well!
If it's any consolation, I didn't attend Fusion either, it came right at the end of a very costly and busy month of events, gigs and fairs etc. I was desperate to go, as Jewel, my favourite BDH was there, but in the end it just wasn't logistically possible. I'm ecstatic about the news of the Serenity con though, and will book for that as soon as tickets are available.

Fusion was the first Starfury con I have attended, but I would definately attend another.
The ticket price was reasonable compared to other cons and the photo sessions were reasonably priced.
You could get a personal item signed for free and buy three photos for autographing. Autographs were done according to ticket number, so the higher your number the more risk you won't get an autograph. The Fusion guests were excellent because they were only scheduled for a couple of hours autographs a day, but most of them stayed until every attendee had been seen. You do have to queue a lot, so wear comfortable shoes.
You had a few minutes to snap off shots at the start of each Q&A session, but were asked not to take pictures during the session, which is understandable.
During the evening there was a fancy dress competition and a disco every night. I didn't attend these so can't comment on what they were like.
Overall it was well run and fun.
Does anyone know how much Collectormania charge for autographs? as I'm thinking of going.

Prices of signings at Collectormania vary depending on "status" of celeb. I got Corin Nemec for £15 and I think Gates McFayden was about £20, I don't recall anyone being above £25 but can't be sure. Tend to stick to getting my photo taken with celebs unless they're one of my fave's.
I can wholeheartedly recommend the London Expo though as the seating arrangements are good with space to nip in between the queues for quick photos.

I'm in the North, near Leeds to be precise. I'm always up for a convenient meet-up, perhaps in Manchester. Oh, and we're called Redcoats, by the way! (Okay, so it's not official, and I made it up and only insist on using it out of shameful egotism, but what the blim)
I am currently working on a cunning fan-fic which will somehow transplant the cast of Spaced and Black Books into the Firefly universe. Dwayne Benzie will be a key bad guy. "Hi, this is Dwayne Benzie..."

"Hi..."
Cue montage of Tim Bisley larking in a saloon with his then best friend Dwayne. Tim washes Dwayne's hover-car as Dwayne boasts to him. Dwayne shoots a hoop and Tim applauds. Dwayne and Tim have a beer standing next o Tim's new Firefly class transport.
Dwayne: "Y'know, Tim, your ship is very beautiful."
Tim nods, smiles and shrugs good naturedly.
The camera pans around and reveals huge feck-off knife behind Dwayne.
That sort of shameless homage/ripp-off, y'know.
(Only not, obviously. But I am rubbing my hands with glee as I type this story, which admittedly slows down my words-per-hour rate somewhat)

I went to Fusion too and was pleasantly surprised at how well organised it was, I can't wait for the Firefly con that they are running next April.

I was at Fusion, and thought all the guests were really great, especially the Firefly guests.
I am also going to the White Room and I think its going to be a lot of fun, and it will be lovely to see Summer again as she really seemed to appreciate the direct feedback and love of the fans, and both her and jewel got a bit misty eyed at the end. I am booking for Serenity convention next April/May and tickets go on sale 10am monday 5th July, so form an orderly queue.
I'm currently in Leeds too, living here for a while, and we sometimes do have meet ups from the conventions, just a bunch of us in a bar basically.
I've written some fanfic too, its on here in fact, first two parts out of three are up, third part is done, being edited by a kind chum, will follow shortly. Its called Dire Straits, and wanted to get as close as possible to a real episode if it had continued, not any kind of romance that I fancied seeing blossom out of proportion between characters on the show. Have a look. See you at a con perhaps!!

Hey hey hey, If the name doesn't give it away my name's Dave and I'm a UK fan...... and I'm in the West!!!!! Well the South-West anyway. I'm in a town called Weymouth in the South of Dorset.
I'm currently spreading the word of Firely through the local area. My conversion count is at 5 (plus 1 at Uni in Loughborough).
It was weird being a UK fan beacuse as soon as I got into the show and tried to find more about it (checking out this site) I found out it had already been canceled. It was like being given a newborn puppy and having it taken away after a month.
But I'm probably saying nothing that hasn't been said before. But heh this is my story.
I'm loving the bristol premiere idea, have to start growing my hair to get the proper mal look.
Ok, thats about it........ I'm a man of few words with too much crap in them.
