Jerry Pournelle recently just started watching FF on DVD at the sugestion of readers of his blog at http://www.jerrypournelle.com. A "hard" SF author, he's naturally picky about TV SF. Here is his initial opinion:
"I have been watching Firefly. It's certainly better than many SF shows that got more attention. There is a Wild West flavor, but that was intended, and I think they bring it off reasonably well."
May seem like faint praise (not really, given the source), but he hasn't even got to the best eps yet
And, like you, I'd love to know which higher profile series he thinks FF is better than.

That's pretty good news. I think I've met the guy once, as he knows my mom. He'll probably have more recruiting power than the average browncoat, given his connections and influence.

You know, being a long time hard-SF reader myself (and currently 3 years into writing my own hard-SF novel) I was not immediately taken with Firefly when I saw the first broadcast episode, "The Train Job." I kept watching though, and found myself quickly becoming enthralled with the characters and Joss Wedon’s clever sense of humor. I think that once Jerry watches all of the episodes, he will become a “reluctant but rabid" fan as well….
