Polanski could face two years in prison
This week, a Swiss court rejected his bid for release on bail, saying the risk he would flee was too high.
His lawyer, Herve Temime, said his client's strategy remained unchanged.
"Mr. Polanski will continue to fight this extradition request and demand that he be freed," he said.
The director was originally indicted on six charges, including rape, for having sex after plying the girl with Champagne and drugs. He pleaded guilty to a single count of having sex with a minor and spent 42 days in prison undergoing psychiatric tests.
But he fled before the case was concluded because he believed a judge would sentence him to up to 50 years behind bars despite a plea agreement for time already served.
The Swiss ministry noted Polanski had admitted to unlawful sex with a minor during the U.S. investigation: "He is wanted by the U.S. authorities with a view to passing sentence for this offence," it said.
Polanski has avoided countries such as Britain that have extradition treaties with the United States, but repeatedly visited Switzerland, where he owns a chalet in the mountain resort of Gstaad.
He has never returned to Los Angeles, where his pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered by followers of Charles Manson in 1969.

This is why nobody should take a "plea bargain", since ANYTHING can be used by a judge to send you back to jail for "violation of parole".
In Polanski's case, he appeared on TV in France practically bragging he was having sex with the little girls he was hugging on TV. The judge didn't like that...
If Polanski can just hold out until Obama signs the Kosher Pedophile Protection Act, he'll get out of jail free, since it will then be a hate crime to arrest pedophiles.

Later, I chatted with the couple who live next door. They never saw much of Pearlman, they say, but he was always polite when they did. Parties? Not many, they say. In fact, the only time they ever wondered about their neighbor was several years ago, when a gardener motioned toward Pearlman's mansion and made what seemed like a strange comment. "If you have a little son," the gardener said, "don't let him go to that house. Bad things happen there."
