Folk can complain all they want about FOX and CBS, but a lot of the problem with DOLLHOUSE is that the first season was, to be kind, not good.
Yes, it got better as it went. Yes, a few of the episodes near the end were probably good that they might have redeemed the abyssmal first act of the season... but you only get one chance to make a first impression, and DOLLHOUSE blew it.
I know a bunch of Whedon fans--all of them FIREFLY fans, some of them fans of Buffy/Angel, as well--but I don't think there's one of them who made it to Season Two besides me. Some couldn't even get past the first episode. And frankly, I can't blame them. FIREFLY, this is not.
Personally, I watch DOLLHOUSE every week and generally enjoy it... but the low ratings aren't entirely the fault of the network or the competition. Weak tea is weak tea.

Bingo.
Don't blame CBS or Medium for Dollhouse's failings. Medium didn't have enough viewers for NBC to keep it, but CBS thought it made a good fit with Ghost Whisperer, which (for reasons that completely escape me, but I'm guessing there's TWO of them -
) is a big hit for CBS. I can't fault them for wanting to put Medium with a hit as its lead-in, especially since they both seem to deal with roughly similar stories and themes.I recorded Dollhouse, but haven't felt the urge to watch it yet.

I don't watch s**t on broadcast TV, I can't deal with commercials. Times, they are a changing. I'd PAY for a Whedon show straight up, non-network-ized, but man, I am done with this suit-mandated bulls**t.
Gimme low-rent greatness like Burn Notice; big-budget stuff on TV is a thing of the past.

I haven't watched Brothers, but from the clips an descriptions it doesn't seem to be the perfect show as a lead-in to Dollhouse. I'd love to see a Thursday lineup of Bones, Fringe, and Dollhouse, but Fox seems to want to have 10 o'clock news.

Thursday night would be death to DOLLHOUSE, regardless of the lead-in. It's a battlefield night (probably the biggest one of the weak), with a number of strong contenders already in place.
In earnest, I don't know what FOX was doing putting FRINGE there. GRAY'S ANATOMY, CSI, SUPERNATURAL, and THE OFFICE are all well-established shows with strong followings. As many as three of these are intelligent shows (ie, "worthy competition"), who might have an overlapping audience with a show like FRINGE (or DOLLHOUSE).
I don't know what the ratings will be like, but my expectation is that FRINGE will place 4th or 5th, which doesn't make for a spectacular lead-in.

I'm in the Dollhouse/Fringe camp, although not on Thursday night. I agree that it's been rough deciding between the Office and Fringe (I watch Fringe and catch the Office on Hulu).
I would prefer Fringe and Dollhouse together on Tuesday night, what's the competition:
Dancing with the Stars, NCIS and the Biggest Loser.
Ok, I admit, I watched some of the Biggest Loser last Tuesday because there was little else to watch.
Sometimes you'll find me watching the HGTV channel whenever baseball isn't on the tube (Go Yankees!).
I watched the season opener of DH and I wasn't Wowed! Joss really needs to put this puppy in gear before Fox pulls the plug. The last 20 minutes of the show was worth it but JW has got to hit it out of the park next week or I see trouble.

Well to begin all I am a little disappointed by Dollhouse's ratings. While I liked the premiere myself but agree it (as in the show) has room for improvement Joss and all will step up.
Also other things to look out for...as a bold prediction I don't see CBS's Ghost Whisperer (Medium's key show) lasting past the Golden Globes in January 2010! There I said it and as such am about to provide evidence as to why: The real-life romantic relationship of Ghost Whisperer co-stars Jamie Kennedy and Jennifer Love Hewitt! Plus fan outrage of Jamie Kennedy being on the show at all to begin with!
Lemme break it down for you. Before their relationship began in January 2009 (yeah I know the press say March was when Kennedy and Hewitt got together but DO NOT BELIEVE IT. IT WAS ACTUALLY JANUARY) Ghost Whisperer was getting it's highest rating ever: a 3.3/11 with 11.3 million viewers. Since then though fans have been leaving the show like rats running off a ship ready to fly herself apart. They don't like Kennedy (or his character) being on the show at all and they don't like him being with Hewitt in real-life.
How I know this is I have read the Ghost Whisperer forums and JLH fan forums over the past few months and I have never seen such a backlash over an action a show has made for its universe and its star have taken with their own career and life in my whole life. On the combined forums I have seen at least 1650 forum threads with the titles "If Jamie Kennedy doesn't leave Ghost Whisperer right now I am not watching anymore!" or "If Jennifer and Jamie do not break up their relationship I am never watching the show again!" with about an average 237 replies each all seconding and agreeing with the thread starters position.
Now look at the numbers from best for Ghost Whisperer rating to Friday season premiere: January 2009 episode: 3.3/11/11.3 million total viewers. Premiere Sept. 25th: 2.2/8/8.58 million. As you can see the exodus of fans from Ghost Whisperer (and being a fan of JLH) has begun and had quite an effect already. And its not over...not by a longshot!
See, as long as Jamie and Jennifer stay together in their real-life relationship more people will leave Ghost Whisperer and watch something else. The trend has begun and won't stop. The projected numbers of people leaving the show will continue a downward trend doing quick math. I can see them losing another .4 points in the 18-49 plus another 2-3 in share by January and about another 2.2 million total viewers lost as well by then as they already lost 2.72 million fans already since January 2009.
Another interesting word of note: Hewitt and Kennedy are completely unaware and neglectful that their relationship is doing this. Plus, based on Hewitt's commentary of her relationship with Kennedy on CBS' Craig Ferguson late night show on Thursday this relationship between her and Kennedy is NOT ending anytime soon.
Now that I'm done with the evidence my final thoughts. If Ghost Whisperer falls by the time my bold prediction says they do, then Medium loses its greatest asset plus will likely have to move to the 8PM timeslot and CBS will have to call in a mid-season replacement to replace their spot. Meaning Dollhouses improvement looks to be soon. We have Summer Glau coming in and the show can only go up from here. We got one of best creative minds in the business behind us (Joss Whedon), we'll get this one. Sometimes, you just gotta be patient. Sorry to go so off-topic in the 'Verse talking about GW and all. Thought though this new info I provided could put some minds at ease. I am out!

Brothers was better than I thought it would be. CCH Pounder is definitely the best thing about the show, but Michael Strahan actually does have some comedy chops, which came as a complete shock to me.
But I agree with Geezer - it's not the ideal lead-in for Dollhouse.
And I agree with others in that Thursday night would mean death to Dollhouse. I've already got scheduling conflicts on Thursday; I'm recording two shows at once, and still have to go to Hulu to watch The Office and Community. Right now, I'm willing to record Dollhouse and watch it at my convenience, but I"m so ambivalent about the show at this point that I'm not even willing to go to the trouble of watching it on Hulu or downloading it through iTunes if I miss it. Put it on Thursday, and I'm long gone.
And RareAir, thanks for the ray of hope in the demise of Ghost Whisperer. One can always hope... ;)

There will be repeats of three W13 eps this week, then the week after they start Scare Tactics again, a show I have absolutely no interest in.
