ugh! I'm with you...Joss really needs to stop messing with my favorite characters and let them have an ounce of happiness for once.
Okay I know thats not his style but shall we examine the evidence.
(Spoilers for all of buffy, Angel, Firefly/ serenity, and dollhouse)
Select to view spoiler:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
Jenny Calender
Kendra
Joyce - though this is one of the only character deaths that really was good for the series (even though Joyce was one of my favorite characters, her death really causes serious development for buffy)
Oz - not really dead but might as well be
Tara
Anya (the most unnecessary death of the series)
Xander's eye
several potential slayers my personal favorite being Amanda
and the unfulfilled Buffy/Angel relationship
Angel:
Doyle
Cordelia
Fred
Wesley
Darla (If you wanna count this one)
Lilah (I was very upset by this one, she was such a good villain!)
Angel's chance of becoming human
Firefly/Serenity:
Book
Wash
Dollhouse:
Well none so far i guess, though we did get some painful foreshadowing to what our favorite characters become in Epitaph One: prime example: Topher.
hopefully i didn't miss anyone
I rest my case.
Although it would have been nice to see these characters grow more, i can see why some of them were axed in the case of Fred, if you're watching you're way through Angel right now, it leads to some interesting developments, which i like, though i'll always will miss fred.
And whenever something happens to a character i like in a joss whedon show like that, the first thing that comes to mind for me is "They're still alive in fanfiction!!!!" and then i brainstorm ideas.
The above statement makes me sound so fanboyish it's ridiculous. So i digress. In short: Joss, quit killing off our favorites!!!
(But still make your stuff good...)
(gosh i am so conflicted about this)

Exactly, as soon as you saw that look, you almost knew it would end badly.
It's one of my favorite moments for Lorne in the entire series though. At that point, he really has progressed past the funny green guy that sings.

I agree with everyone!! I'm just re-watching the entire series and I was dreading and looking forward to "A Hole in the World" so much, if that makes any sense. Lorne was amazing in this episode. And it was so great to see how each person reacted to losing Fred, each one had their own reasons for loving her.
Does it make sense that Fred and Illyria are both favorites of mine?

I think ti makes perfect sense, i feel much the same way. Even after that point when we lost Fred, I found Illyria to by a very interesting character.
Sometimes it felt like fred never left, and i always held out, hoping that Fred was still there somehow.
I really enjoyed "The Girl in Question" for this reason.

Also, the words to "You Are my Sunshine" are so fitting for Fred and Wes's relationship.
You'll never know dear, how much I love you...
Please don't take my sunshine away...

Lorne grew on me more than any other character. At first, I didn't " get " what was up w/ the green guy w/ horns... but man, as the series continues, he really stepped up his game. Props to Andy - always.
Fred's easy to love, much like Kaylee or Willow. Lilah, wow...she knocked my socks off from the moment I saw her. I put her right up there w/ Dru and Darla as fav fem fatales. And Lilah could deliver a wicked line as whimsical as any....
" You're not handicapped, you're handi-capable. " - Lilah, noticing a 1 handed Lindsey having trouble w/ his artificial hand.

A little late to the party, I know, but I only just got around to watching Seasons 2—5.
I'd read the transcripts of those seasons a few years back, so I knew what happened to everybody... but I was truly dreading the coming of "A Whole in the World" on my playlist.
But, being the nature of binge-watching, I only had a few seconds to grieve over Fred before seeing how awesome Amy was as Illyria! (Man, I'd have been inconsolable if I'd had to wait a week!)
Likewise, the final scene with Wesley had me crying my eyes out — until "Fred" morphed back into Illyria and took care of Cyvus Vail!
And I was cheering her final line, in the alley: "Wesley's dead. I'm feeling grief for him. I can't seem to control it. I WISH TO DO MORE VIOLENCE."

Heh... I'm w/ you there. On the 'power viewing' and Illyria.
I just saw a vid on Much Ado About Nothing, and it was great to see Alex and Amy back on the same project.
Hee hee.
