I concur with your assessments. I rewatched Mission to Mars just to be sure a few nights back. The story seems to have been edited by a 5 year old.

Bladerunner was incredibly influential on a lot of anime, and Ghost in the Shell owes a lot to it. It would be great if someone could pull off a Bladerunner TV series or mini series which, in turn, was influenced by GitS. It's a circular industry, after all.

Yup, that's the one. Although I'm not sure keeping Dick's title would make it more likely to pull in an audience. Seems tons more people know the story better through Ridley Scott's eyes than throught Philip Dick's, but ain't that just the way of the world...
Anyhoo, it seems like a pretty good premise and a pretty good 'verse to explore some of what it means to be a human. I'm not so sure it would wreck that world to explore it. After all, wasn't Joss kind of asking the same questions with River and the Reavers? What's "human"? What's "monster"?
And there's not a lot wrong with having the usual "monster-of-the-week" episodes while the background story develops, is there? Seems like a world ripe with promise, a la Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, etc.

Yeah, but Mission to Mars had an incredibly hot, young Connie Nielsen. That might have been ALL that movie had going for it...
