But that wasn't the BBC's fault - they would've sprung for a full season, but David Tennant was in the RSC all last year so wasn't available to film a full series. We're lucky to be getting the specials, originally we weren't getting anything ...

Don't forget there's still three specials to come plus a full series of Sarah Jane Adventures (with some very special guest stars) and even a K-9 spin-off - not bad for a show taking a year out.

That was pretty intense

One thing really bothered me, though, as it went on. They really should have cast an actress capable of facial expression to play Jack's daughter. Here's this woman who's gone through all this craziness, and goes through still greater trauma, and she's been botoxed into a vague, mildly surprised half-smile. Even when she was shouting, her face barely seemed to move. Running towards her son at the end, it still looked like she was smiling. It was very creepy and kind of took me out of it. Even if clinging to youth was supposed to be part of her story, or whatever, that doesn't make for a less appalling performance when someone can't move their face.

I was a little disturbed by the killing off of virtually the whole of the torchwood staff, but though Children of Earth was amazing. DId make me think about the gun situation both UK and US. In the UK soldiers were able to muscle their way in and take kids and I'm betting in the US if you tried to pull that gunshots would ring out...
Overall I thought it very effect and a truly interesting moral quandary. Though I was surprised no one thought to bring up ( after the revelation the kids were drugs) that these, like any dealers would be back fore more and more product and giving in just delayed the inevitable.
I was also really impressed with the choice to portray all government officials in this way...
Truly well done, though I'd rather have had the 5 longer episodes last and had a few more Torchwood episodes to start

The entire Children of Earth mini series were PERFECT! I was frozen while watching this awesome piece of sci-fi.

Authors opened very difficult questions.
What will do governements in a similar situation? How will behave our politicians if they feel their necks are in real danger? What will armies do? What about people reactions?

OK, i saw only one young cop who told the soldiers this is not the way.

Children of Earth show is awesome beacuse it showing a different point of view than all those sweet american movies about people loving governement with high morale credit.... Bulls*ts!

As i live in Europe, i know how easy is to sell people in exchange for a short term profit (Munich 1938, Poland - Katyn....)

So i say, end of Torchwood was AWESOME and very DEEP because it pressing me to think about....WHAT WILL BE IF.... and this is great on every show.

Yes, we can be surprised one day when we notice the reality is even worse than this dark sci-fi.

I hope the authors will continue because this show is just different and better than mainstream.

The problem with the theory that a population with guns will stand up to a corrupted government is that governments tend to have bigger, better guns. And tanks. Plus whatever nightmare techno-weapons the boffins have dreamed up.

Anyway, guns or not, I don't think any government could get away with deciding, overnight, to perform such a despicable act.

I thought that was implicit from the whole setup with the 1960s encounter. Methinks your typical politician is quite happy with delaying the inevitable, especially if its until after the next election.

I'm sure that there have been some UK shows that portray a positive image of our wonderful government but, y'know, I'm hard pressed to think of one at the moment. Basically, provided you're not too specific as to which party you're talking about, and keep the Queen out of it, the government is fair game for programme makers.

We may not have guns, but if our government oversteps the line then, by the Lord Harry, they'll feel the sharp edge of our tongues!

Dr Who and Torchwood have quite a high political body count: I think so far they've wiped out the PM and the whole cabinet twice, killed one US President and deposed 2 other PMs (one of whom later got killed off, but went out as a hero).

The biggest sticking-out-of-neck was the end of The Christmas Invasion which was a fairly blatant allegory to a real and controversial event during the Falklands war. That went out at teatime on Christmas Day. If they can get away with that...
