This little blurb popped up at www.scifi.com/scifiwire:
"Fox will release a second special-edition DVD of X-Men and a new DVD set of Angel early next year, Variety reported."
Can anyone confirm this? I sure hope they're talking about the US releases..
Sounds like Fox is starting to release DVD sets before TV syndication takes place. (The past few months have seen the first seasons of "24" and "Malcolm in the Middle" come out on disc.)
I like this new strategy and I hope they stick with it.

At The Futon Critic, I read that FOX only announced plans to release the first season of Angel on DVD. A date was not released (because it won't happen for another two years w/ syndication rights).

Nope. Current street date from FOX on "Angel: Season One" is 2/11/03. It's been timed to fall between seasons 3 and 4 of "Buffy", for the obvious reasons.

Hmm. That's funny. What happened to all the syndication laws?

They're not laws. Just agreements reached.
Since Angel isn't syndicating anywhere, there's no reason not to start releasing. I mean, the first season of 24 is already on DVD.

Yay! I've been waiting for s1 Angel to come out in the US for so long. I barely even remember that season, can't wait to watch it again. The only parts I remember are Doyle, humanized Angel, Faith, and the Shanshu prophecy. But vaguely. Thanks for the news.
Warrick: You didn't have to wound that man.
Mal: Yeah, I know. It was just funny.

There are no syndication laws, just a rule-of-thumb by the networks and syndicators that a show is not worth putting into syndication until at least 100 episodes exist to allow the channels to "strip" the episodes M-F.
The same used to be true for video and DVD, but that has been changing dramatically over the past year or so. It's become obvious that there are a lot more people willing to buy a season-set of episodes for a series than are willing to watch the show in syndication.
Hence, the DVD release of episodes of shows like "Angel", "Farscape", "Andromeda", "24", and tons of others that have less than 100 episodes and limited to no syndication deals.

Nope, indeed it will be released on February 11. My comment was that it was surprising that they were releasing it before a syndication sale.
