Who do you think is better River or Max? Their past? Their family? They both know how to kick @rse and they both have troubled pasts... but River has her brother and Max's brother refuses to stay around (basically explore the pros and cons of everything regarding the two characters and the plots surrounding them)

I'm a bit confused. Which one of them is better ? Better at what? Max certainly has the better deal of things, because she can pass herself off more as 'normal'. River needs Simon and pretty much the rest of the crew to keep it together. ( Whether this is the case after the events of Serenity or not, I do not know )

So mark that one for Max.

So, what I wanted was for people to compare the two characters because they are both so amazing and their secrets are similar in that they both escaped from government labs, they both are being sought by the government, they both have things that mark them as different (i.e. bbarcode and going psycho at the subliminal messages in the commercial) but they also have differences some of which I noted in the original post

Max, because she was the central character on Dark Angel, was much more fully explored and fleshed out than River could have been. Max's troubled past, her loss of 'family', her inability to 'let peeps in'- was all laid out in exacting detail.
While Firefly is the superior show, it is an ensamble piece; DA is basically about Max and Logan, and as such had the luxury of spending a whole lot of time on just 2 characters.

But if you're talking fighting ability, I'd have to hand it to River. She's not nearly as strong as Max, but given her psychic abilities, she could concievably wear Max down while avoiding her attacks. BUT- one clean connection from Max would end that fight...it might be a toss-up....

The better paired fight is between Max and Faith. The season 1 Max looks and acts exactly like faith and they both possess the same skill sets.

I even said once that Dark Angel was obviously copied from Buffy. The show came out in 2000 which put the writting and casting time period right at buffy season 3. Gee....who looked exactly like Max and was on TV then?

Though I saw DA first, when I got to season 3 of Buffy, I did notice the similarity in look.. but they're such different characters, it didn't jar me.
But it did make me instantly interested in Faith.
