For the record, I'm fine with taking liberties, but I find it more engrossing when a story hews closer to canon and STILL makes me pay attention by bringing out tiny details that you never heard before or didn't consider, but which fit and mesh perfectly with canon. And THAT, Merlin doesn't do very well at all.

Roger that. I have not seen this at all so far, and unless I start hearing some pretty righteous buzz I don't think I'll be going out of my way to include it in my viewing schedule. I saw a Merlin promo the other night in which young Arthur is apparently using magicalistic powers to clean his room, and Merlin walks in on him. I don't know / can't remember what the exact dialogue is, but in my mind it's like this:

"Ar-THUR! What-did-I-tell-you about using magic to clean your room?!"

(broom, bucket, various other items come crashing to the floor)

"Clean?!...magic?!...room?!...Oh golly no, Mr. Merlin, sir! I was just polishing my halberd...!"

(hilarity ensues)

But thank goodness for MP and the HG - otherwise I'm not sure any more how peeps would hear about the Lady-of-the-Lake version of the legend. Folks these days are so leapt-up over sticking swords in stones and then pulling them back out again...

Sadly, that dialog is about spot-on - only it was MERLIN who was using majicks to clean his room, and it was Dr. Gaius who walked in on him. Sorcery and majicks are outlawed in Camelot under Uther.

And wasn't "Camelot" itself Arthur's thing from the start? I don't recall Uther ruling over Camelot...

Anyway, I'm watching it, but I won't be terribly saddened when it's canceled.

And you don't get to be king just because some watery tart starts lobbing scimitars at you.

Hmmm...I may be too ignorant about the particulars of this series to make effective fun of it. Who the hell's Dr. Gaius? Sounds like one of the chimp extras from Planet of the Apes.

What about moist-ened bents...?

WOMAN: Well, how did you become king then?
ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake,...
[angels sing]
...her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from
the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was
to carry Excalibur.
[singing stops]
That is why I am your king!
DENNIS: Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis
for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate
from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: Well, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just
'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor just because some
moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
ARTHUR: Shut up, will you. Shut up!
DENNIS: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help, help!
I'm being repressed!
ARTHUR: Bloody peasant!
DENNIS: Oh, what a give-away. Did you hear that? Did you hear that, eh?
That's what I'm on about. Did you see him repressing me? You saw it,
didn't you?

So there you have it. How to be a King. Step One: Get some waterlogged bint to toss a sword at you. Step Two: That's it. You're King.

I assume you mean the US or something right?

The ratings are doing good elsewhere, with the BBC about to announce a 3rd season contract.

Although, I've read that the NBC is very happy with the ratings given the price they paid. Have you heard differently??
