question for your consideration: in 'the train job' mal says that famous line "I'm thinkin' we'll rise again." you guys think that means that if a second war were to break out he would participate in it? you know, do it all over again?
Zoë: Sir, we don't want to deal with Patience again.
Mal: Why not?
Zoë: She shot you.
Mal: Well, yeah, she did a bit.

I think he still believes in the Independents' cause and that he believes that eventually some planets will try to break out of the Alliance again.
Would he join up again? Don't know. He's learned a way to get along in the Alliance's system that doesn't feel like compromising his principles. Lawbreaking, but as seen in Bushwhacked, he's a pretty good sport to officers and representatives of the Alliance, all considering.
I think there would have to be three conditions met: he'd have to be still young enough to fight, his crew would need to be safe, and he'd have to have reasonable reassurance that his side could actually win this time.

Well, there was the Battle of Sturges, mentioned in 'Those Left Behind.' Bloodiest battle of the whole war; Mal would hold it was the second. And, I do believe The Message had some battle scenes. Battle of Du-Khang, if memory serves.

The winter campaign on New Kashmir.

Sturges was space battle, Mal was not there.
New Kashmir and Du Khang both included Mal and Zoe, before the final battle of Serenity Valley. See the deleted scene from Pilot Serenity for why the naming.
